    Lose/Lose

From Jerry Sullivan updated minutes ago:

"Things just keep getting worse for the Sabres. The Oilers just gave Thomas Vanek a seven-year, $50 million offer sheet. That's almost exactly the same annual salary that Chris Drury got from the Rangers. The Sabres, who are already reeling from the aftershocks of the Drury-Daniel Briere departures, have to match this deal. How could they justify losing their top three offensive players?

Once again, the front office screwed this up. The Sabres surely could have signed Vanek for a lower sum if they had acted more swiftly. But they did the same thing as in the Drury and Briere negotiations. They waited and it blew up in their faces. Will these guys never learn?

What do you think? Can they possibly not match this deal? And how do they sell their team as tougher and more defensive minded with Vanek as the centerpiece and, by far, the highest paid player?"

If they dont match, say goodbye to the fan base.

If they match, they costed themselves MILLIONS by waiting.

Total lose/lose by the front office that I now consider among the worst in history of Buffalo Sports.

The worst thing a team can do is let other teams set the price for its players.

The way to deal with the insane contracts that come from free agency is to keep your players as far away from that as possible. Lock them up well in advance.

Dude, everything you see is the "worst in history of Buffalo Sports".

Your hyperbole makes everything you say lose impact.

This is not even close to the worst ever. Do you remember Gerry Meehan? Or the Bills in the mid 80's?

Apparently we haven't grasped that concept yet. The Sabres FO is going to fight the good fight for the small market teams and not help to drive the salaries up. Meanwhile, they just sit back and watch our team get picked clean by all of these vultures.

Or sit back and watch the vultures eat up our cap room when we're forced to match

According to Quinn, Vanek did not want to work on a deal.

Which, despite who it is saying it, is beleivable.

I know some think this never happens, but sometimes players do not want to talk to the team.

Yeah, because after they F'ked up and lost Drury and Brier he knew he was in the driver's seat, why would he want to talk?? No matter how many excuses you make for managment, this one is on them. Why should we believe anything that F'king con-artist Quinn says anyways.

He was in the driver's seat because he knew he could get a big offer from somebody else.

The FO has made plenty of mistakes this offseason. But this one was not as easy as some seem to think.

I bet Vanek would have been more receptive if this was a FO that isn't the keystone cops when negotiating deals ... like reaching a deal but not confirming it for two weeks

There's a huge problem with the Sabres, they have been handcuffed by the cap the past 2 seasons. Had Drury signed the elleged deal last fall somebody would have had to have been traded since they were right up to the cap. Now they can't extended Soup or Hecht because hey are running out of room, they've been in a tough spot. I've heard from inner agent circles that Vanek turned down informal offers from unamed teams(including the Sabres) for up $6M/yr. His agent knew what he was doing and got Vanek the best deal possible. More than Briere.

I know it seems strange but actually think the FO wanted Vanek back more than Drury or Danny...it's pretty obvious now.
