I would have done it. I'd feel like the Cowboys raping the Vikings for Herschel Walker.

you are confusing football and hockey...too many 1st rounders don't pan out - that is why teams were fleeing out of the 1st round this year.

Would you give up Derek Jeter or Jorge Posada for 5 1st round baseball picks?

Partially true. This season was a weak draft though.

football 1sr rd picks can make an immediate impact.

Hockey 1st rd picks usually take 2-5 seasons before they even start playing regular shifts in the big leagues.

Posada, yes. Jeter, No.

Vanek is no Jeter.

I'd have took the 4 first round picks and hoped Edmonton had the worst record in the NHL the next 4 years.

LOL...and if they get to a cup final again with a 50 goal scorer?

:coocoo:

Edmonton sucked the second half last year- but they are a good franchise with a long history of building good clubs.

If this was Columbus- I might be on your side

Then I'd hope the 3 years after that they had the worst record in the NHL.

Hope doesn't make a team win or lose. Hope is for 12 year olds looking for a kiss.

When predicting the future all one can do is hope.

that is why successful teams don't hope or pray.

I can understand what you are saying. Edmonton doesn't look like they will be very competitive next season and there is a chance that the Sabres could have a chance to acquire John Tavares next year. I have also seen that the next couple years will be very strong drafts in the NHL. But, like Eb says, to many NHL first round picks don't work. It isn't like the NHL where you are drafting a little older kid that is more mature. You are drafting an 18 year old in the NHL as compared to like 20 in the NFL, that is a big difference.

It was the right and NECESSARY thing to do to sign Vanek. Unfortunately, our policies costed us millions more than it needed to.

can you imagine the backlash had this team lost Drury, Briere, Vanek and Zubrus within 5 days and only had future first rounders to show for it?

our system is full of good people. We don't need to invest in bringing them up and then have them swept away as they hit their prime.
