Vanek and Briere + / - is just horrible, it explains why they didn't get a big offer

Find 2 guys that just left and how they did on plus minus:

Captain clutch Drury that we couldn't do without: + 1 all year long

Briere: + 17 but he was 10th on our list.

Vanek: + 47 (lead the NHL)

Who do you sign, the guy that helps you all game long not get behind?? Vanek and Roy rule a very telling stat, plan on both getting much better.

I can understand where you are coming from and I can appreciate the effort, however, Drury always played against the top lines in the league. Not only offensive, but defensive. Vanek usually rolled against the third lines of teams. Either way, a +43 is still pretty impressive.

One thing that will really hurt about losing Briere is he was probably one of our best if not the best in overtime shootouts. The Sabres won a lot of shootouts because of Briere and Miller. Vanek really needs to improve in shoots next year and replace Briere.

unless it comes down to a playoff spot i could give a damn about where they finish in the standing

1 - 8 doesnt make a damn bit o diff

by the time a series gets to game seven anybody can win it

busting your ass to try to be the top of the conf or division in the nhl is the least important in all of the major sports

+/- is at least as much arbitrary as it is a reflection of skill

cmon vanek is good but he isnt the dynamite defensive forward of the decade. he played against second and third tier players all the time

his +/- for the upcoming season is going to be close to even. trust me

Don't care about shootouts? That makes absolutely no sense. Last I checked winners of shootouts get 2 points and the loser gets 1 point. Winning/losing the majority of the shootouts could be the difference in making the playoffs and sitting home for the playoffs. Go ask anyone that plays in the NHL and see if they don't care about shootouts.
I agree you need to bust your butt in the playoffs to succeed but first you need to get there plus home ice is nice too.

Vanek wasn't out there killing penalties and playing against the opposing teams top line every night.

I like Vanek but lets not wave a broad brush, based on a plus/minus number. Drury should still be here.

Did we get to the shootout because of Vanek going +47 or Drury going +1. Vanek didn't cause as many goals against and scored 43 for himself. The idea behind + / - is to score more on the ice than scored on you, which obviously happened.

You can also argue about the 2 & 3rd line but most teams we played had an excellent 2nd line and was no cake walk. Who has more of an upside a 43 goal scorer with a +47 rating or Drury? Drury was overated and is now way overpaid.

Drury played with the young guys which hurt him. Plus he played a lot on the penalty kill.

Stats don't tell everything. Drury was a true leader and should have been the captain. Briere on the other hand, he can have fun in Philly.
