The Cup Is Half Full Theory on the Sabres

    1) Not signing Briere and Drury to large long-term contracts will enable the team to keep Afinigenov, Miller, Stafford, Lydman, Tallinder and Campbell down the line

    2) Talent wise Tim Connolly is probably in the top 10 in offensive skills in the NHL. If he can stay healthy and play #1 center minutes he could be a 100 point guy.

    3) Derek Roy and Dan Paille has through their Junior careers exhibited many of the traits we highly valued Drury for.

    4) The practice of building from within and not overpaying has been extremely sucessful and the Sabres are deep with NHL ready talent.

I am not saying these are all facts, but it is an interesting way to look at things.

cup half empty/ cup half full... doesn't matter because the Cup won't be in Buffalo anytime soon.

Of course you knew it was going to Ottawa last year.

Well I agree with all your points, but the guys we lost went to other teams in our conference and could be a major threat to us IF we do make the playoffs this year.

          huh? I never said that.

I thought we were gonna beat Ottawa until we lost the first two games.

His point was, nobody was picking Ottawa before the season last year to win the cup or even really be that close. Yet, half the people here have already mailed in Buffalo's chances as shot for next year.

              Exception to prove the rule.

But I guess that's doctrine around here.

what's more likely: the Sabres doing the 1 in a million thing like Ottawa, or the Sabres struggling after losing two players who combined for 162 points without adding anyone?

I'll take my chances on the most likely outcome.

The other side of my point is that this is still not a bad team.

And I'll take the million to one odds.

we were an elite team. Now we're "not a bad team". That's a problem right there.

That's because it's not everybody's opinion that we're 1 in a million to win the Cup this year... I honestly don't think we're going to "struggle" on the level you seem to think we are. I bet we range in the 4-6 spot in the East and if we get hot at the right time and Miller is on fire in the playoffs... you never know.

I never said we were 1 in a million to win the cup.

I said we were 1 in a million to lose key starters without replacing them and not feel any effects, or even get better, like Ottawa did.

I'll be shocked if this team is higher than a 6 seed.

When Drury was here, he was the "heart and soul" of the Buffalo Sabres. And now that he's gone, everyone is downplaying his contribution by saying we'll be fine without him.

another deal will get done. they WILL have another steady veteran defenseman to firm up play in front of miller. trust me

they might have slipped from very good to good but elite didnt get it done so maybe good will end up being better (no choke pressure like last year)

who's available that will fill that role? And where will they get the cash after Roy's arbitration?

You can say the same thing for about 75 percent of the league.

Exactly... my point is counting us out completely as some seem to want to do is foolish.
