<!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --> <!-- template inline -->NEW YORK -- The New York Rangers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=nyr) avoided salary arbitration with Henrik Lundqvist (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3081) by agreeing to terms on a one-year deal Wednesday with the Olympic gold-medal winning goalie.
http://assets.espn.go.com/i/nhl/profiles/players/65x90/2645.jpg Lundqvist

Lundqvist, a restricted free agent scheduled for an arbitration hearing on July 24, will earn $4.25 million next season. He made $817,000 last season.
The two-time Vezina Trophy finalist will be in line for a long-term contract after next Jan. 1 that will impact the 2008-09 cap instead of this season.
If New York signs Lundqvist to another one-year deal in 2008, they run the risk of losing him to unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2009.
It was the second key re-signing by the Rangers in two days after Brendan Shanahan (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=841) agreed to a one-year contract Tuesday to return to New York for a second season. That leaves forwards Sean Avery and Marcel Hossa (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1369), both slated for arbitration, as the Rangers' last remaining restricted free agents.

how the hell are they even under the cap with all these signings? haven't they frontloaded a ton of their contracts?

Damn it! Why couldn't someone have signed Lundqvist to a huge deal to **** them over?

Frontloading does not impact the cap. The cap value is based on average value of the deal.

yup! I hate Gary Bettman! He's trying to help the large markets to make their pockets more full and meanwhile, he's telling the other ones to go **** themselves! :ill:

When did he file for arbitration?

Once that happened, there could be no offer sheet.

yeah, but no one even sniffed him before he filed. What a coincidence. :ill:

That should have been the player for Edmonton to target!

Remember, even with frontloaded contracts, they only pay what the average of the deal is. But I agree with you, I don't know how they can afford this:

http://www.nhlpa.com/WebStats/PlayerSearchV2.asp?OIDTeam=9495 and still sign Avery and Hossa. Remember that is this year's figure and isn't an average of what their salary is, like Gomez is at 10 million. Add to that Jagr I guess get's half of his salary paid by Washington. I don't see Kasparitis on there though.

Well, Lundquist didn't file for arbitration, the Rangers did. I guess with the new collective bargaining agreement, the clubs have a right to file for arbitration for the player. Once Vanek got his offer, Lundquist had his rights retained by the Rangers when they filed for him. Smart move on one hand, but with the signing of a one year contract, they better win this year because he will probably command a HUGE salary next year. I think Jagr's deal is done this year too.

Roloson is decent, but he isn't young.

This one is even better. Shows them about 3 million under at this point. But they signed Kasperitis for over 3 million but since they sent him down to the minors, they don't have to count him towards their cap.

it sounds to me like the Rangers are doing what the Sabres did last season....going for it all. If they don't get the cup, they will let a bunch of guys go.

yeah, i wasn't aware of that otherwise i wouldn't have opened my yap. doesn't seem to make much sense. big markets can toss a crapload of money at a guy for a few years, then drag the length of his deal out and cut him when he's old and not getting paid much. how the hell is that effective economics? didn't this league learn anything from the last work stoppage?

Well, Briere signed a no-buyout clause and a no trade clause as far as I know. So, they will have him on their books for the full eight years unless they can get him to renegotiate.

But yeah, you have the gist of the new economics now. Players will take the front loaded money and then get bought out to save the team money. But I think the remainder of their salaries have to count partially towards the cap. I think it is something like half of it, like in Yashin's case. I will try to find some info.

Check out Yashin's cap hit for the team. Front loaded guys will count hardly anything towards the cap.

Nope, I predict another lockout by 2010 or 2012. :ill:

Unless I am reading it wrong, right now it looks like the Rangers are at 51.699. So they are actually over right now by 1.3. They still haven't signed Avery or Hossa. They will probably buy out Kasparaitus to get under. Boy, I sure hope they don't get an injury or they could be in trouble with the cap. (Not really, I hope Gomez and Drury blow out their knees in the first game.)

Kasparitis is not with the team, he is in the minors, so they don't have to use his salary. Did you check out that other link I posted?

Teams can over the cap by 10% until the start of the season.

No, I didn't see the link. I thought his salary still counts towards the cap. Even it he is in the minors.

Shanahan's deal calls for bonus based on achievements. If he reaches those milestones then my guess it hits next year's cap so they really be cap strapped next year especially with Lundqvist being a restircted free agent again.
