Divorcing the disgruntled: Sometimes it's the only answer

    March 18, 2003

There is something to be said for allowing a disgruntled player to hop the fence and run.

Permitting linebacker Takeo Spikes to sign with the Bills was the right thing for the Bengals to do. They should have rid themselves of Carl Pickens and Corey Dillon when they asked to go, too. Where did keeping them get the Bengals?

Players who want to leave a perennial loser are dead weight on a sinking ship. Throw them overboard and everyone's chances of surviving are enhanced.

The Spikes transaction represents freedom for both sides.

This is a pretty good article but he rips the bills for not winning superbowls than the bengals for not making the playoffs. Takeo you made the right move. Your thoughts? Go Bills

This applies to the Peerless Price situation as well- when he first got the franchise tag, I thought we were going to be stuck with a guy that didn't want to be here. Not that Price had the animosity for Buffalo that Spikes had for Cincinatti, but Price wanted to be #1 and that will never happen as long as Moulds is here.

Fortunately, TD played his cards right and we got something for Price- the article criticizes Cincinatti for not handling Spikes the same way. So Buffalo actually handled the situation better- TD unloaded a player who didn't want to be here but got a needed draft pick in return.
