Howard is a very solid DE and I thought he was a houshold name.

Howard I believe had 11 sacks his rookie year compared to Flowers total of what, 1 or 2?

But at least we never drafted Ryan Leaf. How many good players did San Diego pass up to get that nut job?

Howard is definatly a household name hes a top 15 DE in the league too.

First rule of thumb in any game: Never pick a guy named Flowers! That was the name of that damn clumbsy skunk in the Disney classic Bambi.

I really wouldn't classify Howard as a household name at all.

um.. maybe in your household his name comes up regularly.. i can place the guy somewhat since you told me he was on the saints.. but he is no probowler, and that would qualify to me as a household name.

I said that on draft day, Howard was a better player, he had the size and the college production to back it up. Flowers was all hype just because he put on 20 pounds leading up to the draft. Flowers didn't have a playing weight above 250 in college.

Who cares if he qualifies as a "household name." The point is he's a solid DE, and we could have had him. He's a heck of a lot better than flowers, and that's what this discussion was about. We messed up.

What's done is done. I'm over it. Let's move on.

We coulda had La'Roi Glover if we didn't draft Ray Jackson

Boy would that have solved our DL problem

RB wasn't a concern back then. We had Antowain Smith coming off a solid rookie season. Unfortunately, his Buffalo career was ruined by Joe Pendry and Bishop Harris.

Antowain didn't do much to convince me he was going to be our back for his first few years here, that's why we got rid of him

We can't dwell on the past too much.

We have a new season starting in a couple of very short weeks. Let's focus on that.

A little bit of history: In the 2000 draft, Buffalo was eager to find a pass rushing defensive end. The scouting report on Darren Howard was that he was a big productive DE in college. The negative was that he had a slow time in the 40 for a DE, in the vicinity of 4.95. I think Butler and the scouting staff were scared off by that 40 yard time, and without a proven college DE on the board with the measurables they were looking for they gambled on Flowers who was essentially a bulked up LB with had a real good 40 time (4.6 or so). Butler fell into the oldest trap in drafting. He went for the measurables instead of the proven college production.
