    Bulger gets $10.25 M a year deal

St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger, who skipped a mandatory meeting Thursday when the team reported to training camp, has agreed in principle to a six-year, $62.5 million contract that secures his future in St. Louis beyond 2007.

    Bulger

Bulger's new deal includes $26.5 million in guaranteed money, sources said. He participated in the team's first on-field practice Friday morning after missing Thursday's meeting meeting when the Rams reported to camp.

Bulger had recently suggested he could stage a training camp holdout only to soften the threat, but when he missed the meeting Thursday it raised the specter of a looming camp absence even though Rams coach Scott Linehan described it as "excused ... for personal reasons."

Bulger had one year remaining on a four-year, $19.1 million contract. His agent, Tom Condon, was finalizing contract language on the new deal this morning with Rams general manager Jay Zygmunt.

With a $10.25 million average salary, Bulger's new contract would place him in elite company, just behind Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, Michael Vick, Tom Brady and Brett Favre as quarterbacks who make $10 million or more on average per year.

IMO... JP could end up with a $12M average salary by the time we extend him... Lee Evans should be $10M.

Damn. As of right now, JP shouldn't be making the same money as Bulger. Bulger has proved himself year after year. Glad I'm not the one if the FO who has to make the decisions.

Re: Bulger gets $10.25 M a year deal

Even if JP has a good season, I can't see him getting the same kind of money that Bulger just got.

Bulger has put up good numbers for a number of seasons in a row and could point to the fact that the Rams did much better with him in the lineup than they did when he was out.

If Losman has a good season and the Bills extend him either during the season or at the end, given the numbers that Bulger got with this contract, I could see Losmn getting a contract in the neighborhood of $ 8.5 million to $ 9.5 million with escalator clauses that would raise that number if he meets certain benchmarks (ie bonuses for making the Pro Bowl, throwing for X number of yards and TDs, etc.). With Losman having put down roots in the community, I can see him being willing to take such an extension rather than test the free agency waters--particularly if the Bills extend L.Evans' contract and promise to spend enough to keep the core of the team together. Remember, as much as some of us like how Losman is developing, he is still a young QB who has yet to prove himself to NFL GMs, while is a host of bigger name young QBs out there who are getting a lot more attention (ie Young, Leinart, Cutler, Eli, Palmer, Roethlisberger, Rivers, Quinn, Schaub, etc.).
Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. And, thus it was that they surrendered their freedom; not with a bang, but without even a whimper.

Palmer, Rivers and Losman are clearly the cream of the crop of this bunch.

Palmer was considered a bust by many until he was 4 years in... Losman is at least 1 season ahead of him as far as development.

Rivers happens to be surrounded by some of the best talent in the NFL.

Thats very good. I hope that it means we are saving our cap money because we know its coming and are gonna pay what it costs to keep them. Both are more than worthy IMO.

Bulger has a higher completion percentage and more yards per start than Peyton Manning.

Not saying he's as good as Manning, just saying that J.P. has a ways to go before he gets into that stratosphere.

If JP wants that much JP won't be getting it from Buffalo.

                      Enter Edwards.

also, the whole concept of averaging out the salary per yer is complete bs. It necessarily includes the fake years at the end of the deal.. The real story is that Bulger got close to 30 million guaranteed, which seems to be the new standard for players that are somewhere between very good and great.

Like it or not Losman has a solid season he will be able to command 8-10 mil. Thats just the way it is. Regardless of what people think of his ability or stats. Matt Schaub got 48 mil and was never a starter.

I personally don't think JP would try to break our bank anyways. He wants to be great, and by the way he conducts himself in interviews and gets involved in Buffalo I believe his extension will be sweet but modest in comparison to some other QB's.

That's just the kind of guy JP is, and one of the reasons I'm liking the kid. He won't try to squeeze nickels IMO.

we also drafted Edwards in case it came to that.
