Bill Walsh, former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, died Monday following a battle with leukemia, a source told KCRA 3.

Walsh died at about 11 a.m. at home, officials said.

As some of you may or may not know, Walsh was Marv Levy's assistant at Cal in the early 60s.

noooo :-( this made me really sad really quick when I saw this.. def the best coach IMO in my short time (im only 21 so i havent had as many haha) you will be missed man. SUCH a legacy that is still being lived out right now with the best coaching tree ever.

He was a brillant mind that helped boost the NFL to a vibrant level.

A true giant. RIP . I saw Lombardi, Paul Brown etc. He may have been the best of them all.

As great as Montana and Young were, I wonder how much of it was Walsh ? His playcalling was brilliant.

As some of you may or may not know, Walsh was Marv Levy's assistant at Cal in the early 60s.

Levy gave him a big break, his first college job. Walsh was a high school coach at that time in the area, and interviewed with Levy when he got the Cal job. Levy was impressed and hired him. Walsh used that opportunity as a stepping-stone to his first pro job (with the Raiders).

Another thing some of you may not know, is that Walsh had a strong relationship with Bill Belichick (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Al9joUDuYq98SCCLn29y.lVDubYF?slug=cr-walshinfluence073007&prov=yhoo&type=lgns) and was something of a mentor to him. Belichick used him as a resource in Cleveland and afterwards, talking about running a franchise, and the two became close. That is what separated Walsh from most coaches, was his willingness to help other coaches become better coaches. He loved to teach.
