Paetsch signed, sealed and delivered avoids arbitration

A source tells Channel 2 Sports that the Sabres have avoided arbitration with defenseman Nathan Paetsch and signed him to a three year deal worth just under $3-million.

Paetsch was scheduled for an arbitration hearing August 2nd.

The Sabres value Paetsch's versatility. The 24-year old defenseman is an extremely good skater and valuable on special teams. He scored 2 goals and notched 22 assists for 24-points in 63 games this season. Nine of his assists came on the power play.

Late last week, the sabres avoided arbitration with center Derek Roy as well, signing him to a six-year $24-million deal.

OK, let's give this kid a chance to play and see what he has this season. Time to move a defenseman and make room for Paetch.

            Dump Spacek first.

anyone stupid enough to take either one. Kalinin might have the most trade value.

I think Kalinin still has a good enough rep around the league to get something for him. Spacek is way overpaid for his performance last year.

Paetsch is the fourth-best defenseman on the Sabres, in my opinion, behind Lydman, Tallinder and Campbell, and perhaps the grittiest. I am a huge fan of his and am now expecting Kalinin to be dealt, thus opening up a spot for Nate the Great. If we can somehow move Spacek and get Sekera, whom I like a lot, into the top six with Paetsch and the rest, even better.

                  Tallinder-Lydman; Campbell-Paetsch; Numminen-Sekera would work for me.

I still think Spacek might turn things around a bit this year, he didn't seem to adjust to our style of play last year that well, maybe another year will fix this. Kalinin on the other hand has had plenty of opportunity and I think Paetsch is certainly a more talented player than Dimitri is.

here's more proof that Kalinin or Spacek is out the door

Paetsch said Monday after agreeing to terms on a one-way contract. “To have a three-year NHL contract and solidify myself as an NHL player, I’m ecstatic.

He can't be sent down without going through waivers anyways.
