It's all set. The Sabres are set to ring in 2008 at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Sources tell 7 Sports the NHL has just about finished off the planning for a New Year's Day outdoor game in Orchard Park between the Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The deal was rumored to be in place a few months ago but the league has been busy finishing off details the last several weeks. Now it's ready. The Sabres and the Pens at 1 p.m. on New Year's Day. Sources say the league will formally announce its plans in early September.

Won't be a problem. They have an away game on December 30th anyways....

If we had a home playoff game.... :lmao: .....it would be 4 or 5 days later. That's enough time to tear everything down. :D

They just had to wait to see how the Bills looked to see if it would be possible for the Bills to make the playoffs. After seeing the Bills first team offense and defense, they KNEW that there was no problem having the game on New Years.

Now if they can just make sure the entire city isn't hungover...

Penguins, Sabres will reportedly face off on Jan. 1

ESPN.com news services

Updated: August 27, 2007, 10:20 AM ET

There is apparently going to be another "Ice Bowl", NHL style.

According to a report from The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres will play an outdoor game on Jan. 1, 2008 at Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the NFL's Buffalo Bills.

The game will reportedly air nationally on NBC, but neither the network nor the NHL would confirm the report.

"If and when we have something to announce we will make sure the announcement gets heard," NHL spokesperson Frank Brown told the newspaper.

ESPN The Magazine's E.J. Hradek originally reported in early June on the NHL's plans for another outdoor game.

In 2003, the league took the game outdoors for the highly successful "Heritage Classic" in Edmonton. A crowd of nearly 60,000 braved sub-zero temperatures at Commonwealth Stadium to see the Oilers skate against the Canadiens.

That game was preceded by a legends tilt, featuring stars such as Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Guy Lafleur. Messier, who at the time was an active member of the New York Rangers, received permission to participate in the special event.
