VIKINGS LAND KELLY HOLCOMB by Michael David Smith

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Eagles and Vikings have agreed to a trade that will send quarterback Kelly Holcomb to Minnesota in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.

Holcomb's days were obviously numbered in Philadelphia, as Donovan McNabb is the clear starter, A.J. Feeley has the No. 2 job locked up, and rookie Kevin Kolb is the team's quarterback of the future.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported today that as many as four teams were interested in Holcomb, and that the Vikings and the Falcons were two of them.

PFT has learned that Seattle was also a potential destination for Holcomb, and that the Eagles' final decision came down to whether to accept the Vikings' offer or the Seahawks'. That Seattle was considering adding another veteran quarterback could be an indication that Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren would like to give backup quarterback Seneca Wallace more time at wide receiver, and that Holmgren isn't pleased with the progress of third-year pro David Greene, the Seahawks' 2005 third-round pick.

Holcomb has started 21 games in his NFL career, and his numbers, while not spectacular, are respectable: A 64.6% career completion percentage and a 79.9 passer rating. He'll likely be the No. 2 quarterback in Minnesota, behind starter Tarvaris Jackson. Brooks Bollinger had been slated to serve as Jackson's backup, but his play in the preseason led the Vikings' coaches to conclude that they needed another veteran passer on the team.

There are conflicting reports about whether the sixth-round pick the Vikings gave up was for 2008 or 2009. The Vikings released eight players today, including quarterback Drew Henson.

It looks like Drew Henson should have stuck out a baseball career. His attempt at football has flopped more than his baseball career ever did.

too bad we're not playing them.

Good for him. At this point in his career, backing up a unproven young QB on a crappy team is his best bet to be a starter again.

Too bad the Vikings don't have any receivers for Captain Checkdown to dump off. Hope Adrian Peterson can catch.

This was a great move for the vikings - The Answer has felt all summer long that the Vikings were going to be a 'sleeper' team in 2007. Don't forget they had the #1 rush defense in the NFL last year allowing a meager 62 yards a game on the ground, and they were a top 5 unit overall.

With the addition of the wily veteran Holcomb, The Answer definitely sees the Vikings making a deep run in the NFC playoffs - possibly even a superbowl birth. The Holcomb has a great oline to work with, a great young running back, and his veteran savvy will get the most out of the receiving corps.

Look out......

so in summary we sent KH to PHILLY for absolutely nothing so they could turn around and get a sixth rounder for him. I'm so happy we have such a well managed organization.

And we gave away Walker like candy when DT is our weakest position.

Pathetic. Thank god we got Edwards or this offseason would have been a complete joke!

it's OK that Marv doesn't know squat about managing a football team though...we've got other guys for that.

It is actually a 2009 6th round pick, not next year.

This is more evidence that the Bills FO messed up that trade. That trade has been nothing but an embarrassment.

Great post. I posted a month ago that the Eagles were looking for a 6th for Holcomb and of course people around here where saying it'll never happen.

We got a 7th and they turned it into 6th. Do you realiz how ridculous this is?
Essentially the Eagles turned a 7th into a 6th dealing with the Bills.

Praise Marv.
