Arbitrator to hear Morton case April 3

    By Len Pasquarelli
    ESPN.com

The league hasn't come up with any kind of catchy nickname for the Sept. 4 season opener between the New York Jets and Washington Redskins. But if NFL officials want a moniker for that Thursday night prime-time matchup, which officially kicks off the 2003 season, we've got a suggestion.

    The Enmity Bowl.

Already upset at Redskins officials for the perceived raid of their roster, the Jets don't figure to extend an olive branch on April 3 when, ESPN.com has learned, a arbitrator will hear arguments in the case involving Chad Morton.

Morton, 'Skins contend Jets' deal is voidable

While the chances of overturning an NFL Management Council ruling are remote, the NFL Players Association will officially contend on Thursday that the New York Jets acted improperly in matching a restricted free agent offer sheet to Chad Morton, and that the rights to the standout kickoff return man should be awarded to the Washington Redskins.

The action, which will come during a Thursday hearing with Washington, D.C.-based arbitrator Richard Bloch, figures to further ramp up the level of enmity which already exists between the two franchises.

Morton signed a five-year, $7.945 million restricted free agent offer sheet with the Redskins on March 6. The last two years of the deal were voidable, meaning they would be expunged if Morton reached certain predetermined performance benchmarks.

Chad Morton's messy flirtation with the Washington Redskins took a step toward finally being resolved yesterday.

In a 90-minute hearing before arbitrator Richard Bloch in Washington, lawyers representing the NFL Players Association argued that the Jets did not adequately match the Redskins' five-year, $7.95-million offer for the skilled kickoff returner. The arbitrator said he intends to rule Monday on whether Morton will be awarded to Washington or stay with the Jets.

The New York Jets can only hope they do better on the field against the Redskins in the season opener than their front office has done against Washington this offseason.

Add dangerous kick returner Chad Morton to the list of ex-Jets who will now have their checks signed by Daniel Snyder. The Jets surprisingly lost an arbitration ruling Monday that awarded Morton to the Redskins, but only after sources told the New York Daily News that the Jets made a last-ditch attempt to financially entice Morton to stay.

Why doesn't anyone else realize that Morton sucks, and those 2TD's were an abberation against a pathetic ST unit?
