    Jets running back Jones

    Thomas Jones looks and sounds ready to play in the New York Jets' season opener against the New England Patriots.

    The running back, acquired from Chicago in the offseason, has been practicing this week for the first time since straining his right calf on Aug. 12.

    "I feel a lot better than I felt the past couple of weeks," Jones said Wednesday in his first public comments since Aug. 10, when the Jets opened the preseason with a victory over Atlanta.

    I was short a RB on my fantasy team and just aquired him in a trade. I need him to play.

      Whether that comes on the playing field still appears to be a game-time decision, but New York's star running back remained optimistic Friday about the progress of his strained right calf.

      "I'm feeling a lot better," Jones said Friday, reiterating his comments from earlier in the week.
