The Buffalo Bills were looking to upgrade their blocking tight end position before Sunday's opener following the release of Matt Murphy. The club feels that need has been effectively filled with the signing of Michael Gaineshttp://www.buffalobills.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/news/news.jsp?news_id=5214#) Monday.

The fourth-year tight end has spent his entire career with the Carolina Panthers after they made him a seventh-round draft pick in 2004. But Gaines was put on injured reserve last Saturday when the club signed free agent safety Marquand Manuel and cornerback Dante Wesley. Gaines, however, opted for an injury settlement so he would have the opportunity to play for another team.

Gaines is healthy and able to play right away. He passed Buffalo's physical and performed well in a workout.

Yep, CB speculated that in his blog on gameday.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>MURPHY RELEASE: I think the Matt Murphy release is tied to the fact that they have two in-line tight ends in Royal and Everett and they have just one true H-back in Ryan Neufeld. They were likely hoping that Derek Schouman would come along in camp to the point where they felt comfortable putting him on the roster, but he's still learning the nuances of the position at this level and is on the practice squad. It's my belief that they've found someone who they think can better fill the H-back role. Otherwise why release Murphy? When that unnamed person will be signed is a mystery to me.

He is better than Matt Murphy, and i like this pick up, for now he is the best we can get, but i feel an upgrade over matt murphy isnt very much but i will take it

looks like a Royal clone. But hey, based on the injuries we have , good signing in case Royals goes down. We already lost Everret.

from yahoo..

A seventh-round draft pick in 2004, Gaines started 21 games and played in 42 for the Panthers over the last three seasons. He was used primarily as a blocking tight end. He caught 31 passes for 335 yards with two touchdowns.

Yes, with our current passing attack I would jump at the first blocking TE avail. Marshawn is going to be ridden like a cheap ****.

As a season ticket holder if the Panthers I was real excited about signing Al Wallace and was real bummed when he got hurt because I really felt he would contribute and be a solid addition. Well, I can't say the same thing about Gaines. They gave the guy every opportunity and he really never was more than a journeyman. I think I saw where someone compared him to Robert Royal and I would say that is pretty accurate.
