I've said it before and I'll say it again: I think there is a special place in Heaven for Browns fans. You're some of the best fans in all of sports. Not just the NFL. It's not enough that Pittsburgh was asking if they could turn the Browns into the Steelers' version of the Harlem Globetrotter's Washington Generals and play them every week. And you had to watch your quarterback benched and then traded after twenty minutes of play in Week One.
But it's the little, every game things many people don't see that just dig at you. Things that other fans don't have to worry about. Like the first series of the 2007 regular season.
1st and 10 from the Cleveland 20: Jamal Lewis rush for 2 yards. (this was the high point)
2nd and 8 from the 22: Charlie Frye pass incomplete.
3rd and 8 from the 22 Charlie Frye sacked at CLV 17 for minus 5 yards.
4th and 13 from the 17: Paul Ernster punts. For a whopping 15 yards to the Cleveland 32.But it doesn't stop there. The rest of the stat line for that play reads like this: Penalty on CLV-35-J.Harrison, Defensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at CLV 32. Penalty on CLV-90-D.McMillan, Defensive Holding, declined. Penalty on CLV-56-A.Peek, Illegal Formation, declined. Penalty on CLV, Ineligible Downfield Kick, declined.
To recap: A 2 yard rush. An incomplete pass. A sack. A 15 yard punt… with four penalties.
