Sitting in a hospital room — where she is supposed to sleep, but hasn't — down the hall from where her son is in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital unable to walk, Dugas recalled watching in horror as her son took the step that nearly resulted in the loss of his life.
Dugas, who moved to Houston in January into a home bought for her by Everett, promised her son she would order a satellite system so she could watch last Sunday's season opener against the Denver Broncos. But she mistakenly ordered cable and found at the noon kickoff that she couldn't watch the game. So to keep from disappointing him, Dugas and her husband, Herchel, hopped in the car and went to Mulligan's Restaurant and Sports on FM 1960.
She said she was in the bar for maybe 20 seconds when she spotted the Bills uniform colors on a television. She walked over, stood there and barely caught the end of a play. It was the second-half kickoff.
I can't imagine how helpless a parent must feel in that situation... God bless her.
