View Full Version : NE 38, Bills 7 -- My game thoughts

Before any thoughts from the game, I just want to say I think Vince Wilfork should be both fined and suspended for his cheap shot on Losman. It was clearly intentional and when you do something like that you're putting a guy's career and way of living in jeopardy. He should be punnished accordingly. To me, that's no better than being busted for drugs and getting a 4-game suspension. That was clase-less and dispicable.

Speaking of dispicible, on to today's game.

* 485 total yards to 193. And the only reason that number wasn't well over 500 was because NE stopped trying in the 4th quarter. Do you realize that in three games we've been outgained by exactly 775 net yards? That's about as embarassing as I ever can remember seeing anything by the Bills.

* Let's talk about the obvious first. With Losman injured on the first series, Edwards was thrusted into the game. On his first drive he looked like a 7-year vet with pinpoint passing, but obviously struggled heavily at times afterwards throughout this game. I'll say this though, I'm willing to give the kid much more slack than Losman that's for sure. For starters, it's one thing to prep to start all week long and take the snaps during practice. Obviously, much harder to jump into a game like that, especially against the best team in the NFL. I thought he was pretty poised throughout but he also did some bad things which you would expect. He made a couple of horrible throws and held on to the ball a few times too often. Still, given the situation I don't think he played that bad. I dont know Losman's status at this time, but I'd like to see how Edwards would look with a full week of practice to prepare as the starter against a team Sunday (Jets) that are more realistic to evaluate a guy.

* If Losman is not injured long-term, and doesnt look like his. I wonder where he's going to be at mentally going into next week.

* I think the offensive line played VERY well in passing situations, and very poorly in running situations. I'd like to go back and watch tape of EVERY Lynch carry this year. I'd bet that in 40% of his runs he's hit either at the line of scrimmage or within two yards of his carries. I'd love to see what this kid would do with a fair shake, meaning someone would actually knock a defender on his ass when he's running the ball. His TD again today is a sign of things to come in the future. The kid has skills and heart, but very little support around him right now.

* This team has to be f'n cursed with this Poz injury. What a damn shame, he had four tackles early and was moving good. If this defense wasn't already pathetic enough, it's going to get FAR worse with him out. It sucks to basically be ripped out of your rookie season when so much was expected of you. I feel awful for him. I'm confident he'll be back and much better next year.

* I truly noticed something today.. Whether its Losman, Edwards, Flutie, Joe Dufek or Bruce Mathison-- ANY QB is going to struggle with this crop of WR's. Nobody gets open with any sort of consistency, not even Evans. This WR corp is terrible at seperation and finding an open seam. I can't remember seeing anything like it.

* For the second straight game, DOnte Whitner was a 1000% non-factor. Right now, he looks a hell of alot more like a dime-a-dozen safety than a stud worthy of a top-8 pick. Let's put it this way, guys like Sanders, Polamalu, Reed and Taylor can look in the rearview mirror and see a lot of miles between them and Whitner.

* I don't know if its poor conditioning, doesnt seem like it so it must be on Fewell, but why the **** are Schobel and Kelsay BOTH taking off plays at big points of the game? I noticed with 2:27 left in the half Jason Freekin Jefferson and Neil were on the field in Buffalo territory. Brady completes a pass to Kyle Brady to the Bills 2 on the play right before 2 minute working. Kelsay is basically a $6 million per year rotational player.

* I thought McCargo played well again and I think for the first time this season Kyle Williams actually looked like he belonged on the field. They weren't the problem.

* Angelo Crowell got good really fast, but it doesnt seem like he's taking that next step. His coverage was really really bad today.

* I know Lee Evans is getting double teamed to death and frustrated; why wouldn't he. But elite WR's (see Steve Smith) make plays no matter what. Evans is not doing that.

* What is their left to say about the cornerbacks? They are absolutely horrendous. How Levy could field a team with such lousy cornerbacks on the roster is beyond my dreams right now, and that was BEFORE Webster and now McGee injuries.

I've saved my last thought for the coaching staff. The saying in life usually goes "you get what you paid for." Well the Bills pay **** for their coaching, and upper management positions, and as a result pretty much for the past decade they have gotten **** from them. The coaching, playcalling and strategy is a joke. There's no shame in getting outcoached by Bellicheat or Shanahan, but last week to a first year coach in Tomlin? Jauron is a ****ing embarassment as a head coach. Jesus, what is like 27 games UNDER .500 on his third team? What would possess Levy to hire him other than a savings in Wilson's wallet? This guy is horrible and so are the coordinators, which is directly the responsiblity of the head coach.

One case in point I mentioned earlier with Fewel with his ridiculously absurd pattern of too many substitutions. AGain, Schobel, Tripplett and Kelsay make far too much money to be on the sidelines 30% of the time for the likes of Anderson, Neil and Jefferson.. and have you ever seen a defense where the defensive ends and tackles are in coverage so much? Tim Anderson covering Ben Watson. Jefferson covering Kyle Brady.. Yeah, great scheming Perry.

As for Fairchild, I dont even think he should make it to the bye week. WE debate and certainly will more about Losman or Edwards starting past the bye week? ****, I don't care who starts, nobody has a chance with this horrific playcalling and game planning.

Case in point. 17-7 game. Buffalo gets the kickoff with all their timeouts and 1:17 left on the clock on their own 21. We run on first down to Lynch and he gets cut down for a 1 yard loss. Down 10 with nothing to lose against a better team, you think we'd get aggressive. What do the Bills do? They f'n throw in the towel and call it a half! ABsolutely brutal, these are some of the worst coaches I've ever seen in my life.

SUMMARY: Like it or not, this team is going to be in a dogfight for the top pick in the draft. How we've went to an absolute laughinstock in this league perplexes many on here, but not myself. When you have a small minded owner, a gimmick of a GM in Levy, and a perrennial loser of a head coach with unproven coordinators, it's a recipe for disaster. Until that's cleaned up who's on the field won't matter much.

What's sad is realisticaly for the Bills to have any chance of becoming a contender in the future, they clearly need a new GM, a new head coach, a bunch of new assistants and at least a half-dozen upgrades at woefully week positions. I went from thinking this was a playoff team in 2008 to preparing myself to watch as much of Brohm, Dorsey and a few other blue chippers as I possibly can, because their is little doubt that we'll drafting one of them next year. Let's just hope that it's not Marv Levy bringing up any cards next April nor Jauron coaching them.

Sad to say, but this may be one of the last year this team is known as the Bills. Hey, it's been real, and it's been fun, but God damn, this is just a rediculous way to go out.

I have a Poz jersey, and I wore it every game thus far, but I'm sorry, he's out for the season, I'm hanging it up, and I'm going to wear my Hinds Ward jersey from here on out. I'm sick of this. Not the team, I love Buffalo, I love the Bills, but when the management is so transparently incompetant...I just can't keep on supporting it. Just like the coaches threw in the towel before halftime, I'm throwing in the towel on them.

****, why do they deserve any better? It's jsut getting pathetic and I, personally, am not wasting my time anymore.

Boycott the team in hopes of a management change?

What if we arranged a halftime WALKOUT for a home game, maybe send a message??

The sad part is you are right. Life is too short to waste time on a bunch of losers. Ralph didn't spend near the cap which means he could have kept Spikes and Fletcher which would be pretty valuable right now. Hell, he didn't even sign the guy we got for Spikes.

Pathetic.

They gave up at the half so giving up on them is totally acceptable.

I agree with 95% of what you said...To have an inferior coaching staff, an owner that is spending cash to cap and injuries will make it another very long and painful season.

Im happy you understood the point. I love my Bills, but i absolutely hate what the people in charge have turned it into the past several years.

How far back in Bills history do we have to go to find a three week period where the Bills scored only 24 points? That's an average of 8 points per game!!!

Something else that's very disturbing - if you take away the Special Teams touchdown, the offense has only scored 17 points in 3 games. That's only 5.7 points per game!

How long has it been since the offense for the Bills has averaged only 5.7 points in 3 consecutive games?

Trust me, if the Buffalo Bills move...it will kill what's left of Western NY. It will crush the economy and the spirit. Even though the Buffalo Bills suck, they are still one of the biggest things in this area. They have such diehard support all over the place. Training Camp is always busy, the Bills games sell out or come close to selling out most of the time, people wear Bills gear all the time. The Buffalo Bills and even the Buffalo Sabres are a part of our life in Western NY. If you take them away, you take away the heart and pretty much put the final nail in the coffin for this area. :ill:

Unfortunately the Bills have been outscored 64-10 in the last two games. It pains me to say it but the Buffalo Bills are an official NFL team in theory but with cash to cap and a low budget coaching staff that is outcoached every week they don't field a team that can compete at this level.

raphael120
09-23-2007, 05:01 PM
LAst time I checked, the Sabres knew how to run a professional team. I don't think many poeple in Buffalo would be too heart broken if they gave up one perennial losing team for a winning one headed by a owner who knows how to do business, how to make money, and at the same time while taking money from Buffalo, be giving back to them by actually putting an entertaining product on the ice/field.

 I guess you missed when the Sabres let go of the two best players on the team. :sigh: I guess you missed when they slapped both their captains and fan favorites in the face. I guess you missed when they traded for a guy and he performed very well in the postseason and was pretty popular with the fans, and then didn't even give him a contract offer at the end of the season. :ill: I guess you missed when they paid a 23-year old $50 million!!! i guess you missed when they paid a decent 24-year old $25 million. And meanwhile, they spent all this money, but chose to let their two stars in Chris Drury and Daniel Briere go. Because they were too cheap to pay them.

I dont care that we lost. I expected to. I dont care that we got blown out, that's hardly surprising (though I thought we would cover today)

What bothers me most is its only week three and the team pretty much folded up and quit after NE scored in the third quarter.

Hey, it amounts to the same thing the Bills did yet you blindly supported them.

Listen, it's one thing that the Sabres did that, but it's one thing when a coaching staff that has proven NOTHING while they were here, opposed to a coaching staff that led the Sabres to 2 straight years of dominant hockey, I think I'll give the Sabres the benefit of the doubt.

Brier was a no show when the team needed him in the playoffs and wasn't worth the price tag.

Unlike the Bills, I trust the management of the Sabres because thus far, they haven't let me down with putting a competative product on the ice, and until they fail, I won't question them, especially when the season hasn't even started.

I agree... I will continue to torcher myself every week and root for them but for all intense and purposes their really has not been an NFL football team in western NY in 7+ years. They may don an NFL uniform but that's about it. They are not competitive.

Exaggeration. It'd suck but Buffalo's endured worse. All the factories closing in the 70s/80s was the equivlent of 10 football teams leaving.

Worst case scenario, we become a hockey/college football town.
