Good job NHL.

It's a shame that hits like this still happen.

That is a classless hit..I get a kick out of the announcers whining that McAmmond was in a vulnerable position when he was hit with the intent to injure. I guess their memory is short because other then leaving your feet Neil hit Drury in a vulnerable position with the intent to injure. Both shots were cheap and uncalled for but sounds like a double standard from the announcers.

Im Torn,

Macammond (sp) got away with alot of **** last year, but this is just downright assult, downy or whoever it was, had no reason to pull a elbow first superman hit like that, this rival's the bertuzzi incident in severity, if he dont get at least 50 Games/Season Suspension, there is no justice in the NHL.

Damn, that is one huge cheap shot.

On a side note - Maybe the Sens players and fans will now know what it feels like to see one of your players cheap shot and knocked out of the game. Granted it was more harsh but it gets the point across.

Rules state you cannot leave your feet or lead with your elbow/knee towards the head,

all of those above rules were broken, cheers.

just cuz his head was down does not mean its ok to lead with your elbow and leave your feet.

Camel was referring to the hit on drury..

Anyway, you're wrong. He left his feet solely on momentum of hitting an almost stationary object. He had one foot on the ice at the moment of impact. Downies body is what actually took out McAmmond. No forearm/elbow was used. You see Downies arm extend AFTER the hit, because he is bracing himself as hes falling to the ice. I do not condone this type of hit, but the only reason I see this hit as dirty is because it was late and McAmmond had already dropped off the puck.

BUT, if you watch.. the puck was almost casually dropped off to the point Downie OBVIOUSLY thought McAmmond was still in control. If you have ever played hockey (i'm not talking inline, skate) you are taught to expect the unexpected, always watching players around you. McAmmond made a stupid play and left him self vulnerable for this kind of hit.

Flyers player deserves long suspension and fine

A new punishment could be to start fining the team

the NHL could do away with this in a heart beat...

Lifetime suspension.

The National Hockey League has handed down its verdict on the Flyers' Steve Downie (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/player_bio.asp?player_id=5180).

Colin Campbell, the NHL's executive vice-president and director of hockey operations, has suspended Downie for 20 games for his vicious hit on Ottawa Senators forward Dean McAmmond (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/player_bio.asp?player_id=1338) in Thursday's exhibition game.

The 20 games is the fifth longest suspension handed down by the league. New York Islanders' Chris Simon (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/player_bio.asp?player_id=833) holds the longest at 25 games for his two-handed stick attack to the face of Ryan Hollweg (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/player_bio.asp?player_id=2500) of the New York Rangers last season.

Not enough. This whole length of suspension being determined by injury has to stop. Intent should be the only case for ruling. He wanted to hurt him badly and McAmmond could have been paralyzed or even killed if his neck snapped. To me, it looks like it was close to happening with his head hitting the boards.

Plus the guy was going to play in the AHL all ****ing year anyway! He pretty much got away with murder.

Wait a second JD, first you say the hit wasn't cheap, then you say the suspension wasn't enough? I don't get it, did I read your post wrong?

brutal.

JD

I dont think it was intentional.. but it still caught the guy in the head and was violent. If the NHL wants to lower the boom on headshots they need to enforce much larger penalties.
