    No more "all-star" refs

The NFL plans to scrap all-star officiating crews for the playoffs, choosing instead to use officials who worked together during the regular reason. The decision was designed to eliminate the kinds of gaffes that plagued the postseason.

The move, announced Tuesday at the NFL meetings, is designed to ensure more cohesion within the crews. Until now, playoff crews had been made up of officials who rated the highest at their positions but hadn't necessarily worked together before.

The NFL plans to use intact crews to officiate playoff games next season rather than all-star units -- a move that comes after a postseason marked by officiating disputes.

Maybe the published reason was to promote more cohesion on the officiating team. The real reason: when these guys screw up it won't look as bad as when "all star" refs screw up. Maybe it'll be a little better but questionable competence is still questionable competence whether you know the rest of the guys you're working with or not.
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.
