    Missed block on the onside kick

    Hindsight haunts Bills
    Lots of what-ifs center on play-calling
    By Mark Gaughan NEWS SPORTS REPORTER

    The what-ifs were haunting the Buffalo Bills a day after their incomprehensible loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

    .....

    Dallas’ final pass completion was an 8-yarder from Tony Romo to Patrick Crayton to the Buffalo 35. The play began with seven seconds left, and Crayton got out of bounds with 2 seconds left. Crayton was lined up in the slot on the right, and Bills nickel cornerback Kiwaukee Thomas was well off the line of scrimmage opposite him in zone coverage, rather than playing closer to the line and defending the sideline. It was an easy completion.

    “We were playing Cover 2,” cornerback Terrence McGee said of the Bills’ two-deep zone. “In that, you basically don’t want to give up the deeper route. [Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell] kind of touched on that in meetings. He wished he would have had a man coverage. That probably would have helped us out. That’s the way it goes.”

    On the onside kick, tight end Michael Gaines missed his block on the front line of the Bills’ return team, and that allowed Dallas’ Sam Hurd to get the first touch on the ball and help Dallas recover.

    “The front three block the three [Cowboys], so the man who got his hands on the ball was supposed to be blocked earlier,” Jauron said. “Two of the guys attacked and unfortunately Michael Gaines stayed at the line. That’s the man that touched the ball.

    Looks like Jauron is throwing Gaines under the bus a little bit. It does sound like Gaines messed up, but he did just get picked up a few weeks ago.

    To me it doesn't seem like they had the best personnel out there on the kick coverage. It is such a major play. If you recover, you win. Seems like you need the best talent out there. Is a free agent TE from a couple weeks ago really who you want out there?

    Maybe someone that has been on onside kick coverage through out training camp?

      Whitner had a brain freeze on that play too. He was just staring at the ball. He should've dived (?) for the ball and tip it back to a teammate or out of bounds.

          You do not call a guy out like that through the media talk to him around the team fine ok still harsh but it should be done behind closed doors. Just goes to show you how dick really opperates maybe he should throw fairchild under the bus So heres how this team is going right now.
          Players=Throw coachs under bus
          Coachs= Throw players under bus
          Not good for a team i understand they are fustrated but win or lose as a unit same with evans saying its losmans job. First its not his choice second who cares just get open and maybe someone will throw you the ball. For as close as everyone says this team is there really seems to be a split team to me and one of the most split in the nfl.

            Sure coulda used a WIDE RECIEVER to catch the onside kick!

            Coulda used Scobey somewhere too.
