    Darius signs 'franchise' deal

Jacksonville Jaguars strong safety Donovin Darius on Tuesday evening became just the second "franchise" free agent this spring to sign the qualifying offer for his position, a move that guarantees him a one-year contract at $3.043 million, and virtually removes any possibility the club would rescind the marker.

The five-year veteran was one of eight players designated as "franchise" free agents by their respective clubs last month. One of the players, former Bills wide receiver Peerless Price, was traded to Atlanta for a first-round pick in the 2003 draft.

Darius joins Minnesota Vikings tight end Jim Kleinsasser as having signed the qualifying offer. That does not preclude he and the Jaguars from at some point agreeing to a long-term contract and in some ways, the actions on Tuesday all but assure that will be the case.
