The charges were reported Thursday night by the Fox affiliate in Cleveland and by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and confirmed by a police spokesman.
Cleveland police Lt. Thomas Stacho said Davenport, 28, has been charged with domestic violence, endangering children and unlawful restraint. The charges of domestic violence and endangering children, both first-degree misdemeanors, each carry a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. The unlawful restraint misdemeanor is a third-degree charge, with maximum punishment of 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
The charges grew out of an alleged dispute between Davenport and Anita Person, 27, of Cleveland, the mother of his 5-year-old child.
According to reports, the Cleveland police responded after receiving three 911 calls, including one from Davenport, on the evening of Oct. 4. No arrests were made at the time because, police said, they could not determine a primary physical aggressor. The case was turned over to local prosecutors for investigation and review.
Davenport is not in custody, and Stacho said he will be provided an opportunity to turn himself in to Cleveland police. The Steelers have a bye this week.
Pittsburgh first-year coach Mike Tomlin was asked about the incident following the team's victory over Seattle last Sunday, a game in which Davenport played well and scored a pair of touchdowns. Tomlin acknowledged the Steelers were aware that Davenport had been questioned by police but said that people should defer judgment until all of the facts were made public.
Neither Davenport nor Steelers officials could be immediately reached Thursday night.
