NHL players to use heated blades

The ice was horrible at the game last night, if the players wear these it's going to be even worse.

A select handful of NHL players are about to begin using heated skate blades produced by a Verdun, Que., company to enhance performance.

Thermablades use a rechargeable battery and a microprocessor within each skate blade to maintain a temperature of 5 C. The warm blade increases the thickness of the water layer between the blade and the ice surface, and the company says its tests have shown this reduces gliding friction and starting resistance for skaters.

yeah I saw this on the espn site.... interesting thought. should be interesting to see how well it works at a place with soft ice....

these should definitely be illegal. The more players that wear them, the messier the ice will be. Of course, the NHL wants to speed up the game and supposedly faster players will lead to more scoring, so they're going to look the other way.

It's a good thing the Patriots don't play hockey- if so, the other teams' skates would mysteriously stop heating up in the 3rd period of one-goal games.

on the other message boards that I've read, all the other NHL teams are doing this also "We are ____" (insert team name here) so it's not just the Sabres doing this.

im not imposed to the NHL trying new things, but sometimes i feel like public executions after intermission wouldn't even increase television ratings.

you know i really dont think the heated blades will have any affect whatsover on the ice surface. the difference in temp of the blades would only be about ten deg f max prolly less. the amount of additional liquid produced would be miniscule and would immediately refreeze once the skate passes. we are talking the magnitude of molecules not millimeters of water. i cant imagine there would be even a tiny change in the condition of the ice as a result

i just dont like the idea of putting false forces on the skate. how about powered springs in basketball shoes. how about powered toe flexors in football shoes to increase running speed. just doesnt seem right at all to me
