How Jauron Made His QB Decision

    No instruction manual
Jauron's process was his own. It's unlikely that every coach approaches these decisions the same way. But Levy stressed that there is no blueprint of steps a head coach must take when making a call like this.

"The strongest point I can make is there's not a formula," said Levy. "You have to consider what might be best, what are the repercussions. You don't know if you made the right call or not until the time comes. It's not a cut and dry, no question about it type of thing."

That would probably be the best bet.

I'm hoping two things can come out of this season, 3 i guess:
        1) Johnny Mack and our run D continue to improve
        2) One QB or the other takes command and does not relinquish it
        3) Jauron gets fired and we pick up Cowher

if the first 2 dont happen and we get #3, ill still be happy

wow.. i normally dont say anything about the fluff pieces that come from bb.com.. but jesus..

this article was clearly written on th heels of "Ralph said to start Edwards" rumors.. just to be sure that Jauron was the one who made this decision.

what a pile of **** article...

Jauron would have used a dart board, but he's not allowed to play with sharp objects.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?

Re: How Jauron Made His QB Decision

It is pretty simple how Jauron made this decision. Ralph told him to do it.

This is a rather simple process I think, and the decision was obvious. First off, JP was not drafted by Marv and Co. so they didn't have any investment in seeing him succeed. Plus, it is obvious that they did not have any confidence in JP, since they spent the 3rd round pick on Edwards.

Second, Edwards IS Marv and Jauron's guy, and in addition to that he was talked up by Bill Walsh. Since the kid showed some consistancy, and JP didn't they turned the page.

I think Ralph wants to play Edwards for a couple of reasons. One, I think he believes all the hype surrounding Edwards from Walsh's comments. But I really think the major reason is money. If JP came in and played well then Ralph would have to pony up the cash to keep him. With Edwards he gets a young QB with a lot of upside, but he is cheap over the long term. I think money, or the potential for paying a ton of money had something to do with this decision.

Now, do I disagree with the decision to start Edwards? No. I think he should play. I wanted JP to succeed as much as anyone, but clearly Edwards seems superior with his ability to read a defense and connect on the short to medium routes. We should not forget that when JP was playing Fairchild (who I detest as a playcaller and gameplanner) threw a ton of WR Screens, and that increased his completion %. Edwards seems to control his throws better, he leads his recievers and keeps the ball at a level where the recievers don't have to expose themselves jumping for a ball on those 5-15 yard patterns. I think once Fairchild decides to throw caution to the wind and let Edwards attack downfield, this offense may become mildly entertaining. Now, it must be said I have very little confidence he will do that, but one can continue to hope.

Regardless, now that Edwards has the job I support him fully and I hope everyone else does because he is now the QB of the future. Don't buy that crap that JP was rusty and not healthy. If your starting QB says he's ready to go, you put him in if he is your man. It doesn't matter what they say, Edwards is now the guy, and he should be starting every game from now on unless injured because he needs that experience.

Re: How Jauron Made His QB Decision

Dick went to the take a duke and if it came out runny, JP was going to start, if it came out like a log, Trent got the nod.

The sad part is that Dick decided this would be the way he would make his decision during the bye, but it took him this long to make a pooh, or eh... decision.

No. That's how Romeo Crennel decided who the Browns starting QB was at the start of the year! Sadly, I think you were kidding about Dick, but I'm 100% serious with Crennel. It's how they chose who was gonna start originally.

The more I think about it, the less problem I have with the decision and the way it was handled. I would expect, however, after the Baltimore game or Jet game at the very latest that a definitive choice would be made as to who is going to start the rest of the year.
