WASHINGTON — The Senate has approved a spending bill that includes $500,000 for the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute’s Kelly Center for research on genetic disorders.
The money was included in an appropriations bill for the departments of Labor, Education and Health and Human Services.
A $200,000 “earmark” for former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly’s charity was included in the House version of the bill, meaning that a House- Senate conference committee will have to reach a compromise on the funding.
“Clearing the next hurdle in the appropriations process is a boost to the vital effort led by Jim Kelly and others to fight genetic diseases, like Krabbe disease,” which claimed the life of Kelly’s son Hunter, said Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y.
