PHOENIX (AP) -- It took two years for the Arizona Cardinals to lay the groundwork to sign Emmitt Smith. The next two will determine whether the NFL's career rushing leader made a mistake.

Smith signed a two-year contract with the Cardinals on Wednesday, adding the luster of his name to a franchise that might be capable of tarnishing it. Somehow, the Cardinals convinced him they were committed to improving.

I like Emmitt Personally, but hate his history. The superbowls just wont let me like him professionally.

Unfortunately, this has Joe Montana written all over it.

Dorsett, Harris say Smith should have quit with record

Dallas - Like Emmitt Smith, running backs Tony Dorsett and Franco Harris tried to prove they had at least one more year left when they joined new teams to finish their Hall-of-Fame careers.

If they had what Smith has, the National Football League's career rushing record, both former players said they might have headed for retirement instead of a new club.

Smith, cut by the Dallas Cowboys after breaking Walter Payton's career mark last season, says he can gain at least 1,200 yards this year for the Arizona Cardinals, just his second NFL team. Dorsett and Harris said Smith didn't have to pad the record.

"If I had had the career that Emmitt Smith has had, I probably would have done it differently," Dorsett said in a telephone interview. "You reflect back on all the things you've been involved in with one franchise, and all of a sudden that's being removed, and I actually shed a tear."
