A larger TV market share is the goal with the Toronto connection???

On the Howard Simon show, Adam Benigni said that he was talking to a Buffalo politician. He said he got the impression that this Toronto thing was a move to help the Bills get a larger fan base and make more money. The quote was something to the effect of "If this doesn't work, the Bills aren't staying".

He then went on to explain how if Southern Ontario would start tuning in to Bills games on a regular basis, Buffalo would go from 50th in terms of TV market to about top 10 and then would be able to compete with Boston, Dallas, New York, etc.

I was rather pissed about this thing, thinking maybe Ralph was getting greedy trying to make money off this NFL international thing. But now that I think about it, maybe they do have good intentions. Maybe the high-ups in the Bills organization are trying to make a move, a real move, to keep the Bills in Buffalo. If they can up the Bills revenue, it will make it a heck of a lot easier for the Bills to stay in Buffalo.

My only question, is .. why haven't they said any of this very reasonable logic publicly?

What can we give canucks to leave their TVs on during all Bills games?

if you look at the history and effectively read the sub-text it's clear that this move comes from the league not OBD and the league is just a conglomerate of the owners. They want to test this market and the Bills are clearly the team to do it with because there is already a fan base. Couple that with the pressure they have pushed onto the Bills about not making as much money as they could we have the bills playing games in Toronto. But it's still a test market and not some prophesy we're going to be moving to Toronto.

If Canadians end up finding out about this, why would they bother watching? If they don't watch, they get the Bills, evidently. If they do, the Bills stay in Buffalo. We're screwed.

Canada viewing doesn't count in the US ratings.

Isn't that what all the talk of regionalization has been about?

The problem with this theory is that Canadian television ratings do nothing foe the T.V. contract.

but people in the US will still be watching the game that is in Toronto. And if they can reach another million viewers by building a fan base in Toronto then it will count because advertising is based on viewers reached so companies that are looking for market penetration in Canada will pay more for the advertising spots.
