But while we wait, here's something worth pondering: what if the Raiders had gone another direction.
Not yet midway through his rookie year, Stanford rookie quarterback Trent Edwards has sent J.P. Losman to the bench in Buffalo. He has led a dreadful team to upset wins over the Jets and Ravens and has impressed even the most difficult to impress.
Former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon, normally one of the hardest to convince, has been a convert.
"They came out against Baltimore and ran no-huddle the whole game," Gannon said of Buffalo's 19-14 win last week. "That's not easy for a rookie to do. Trent is directing traffic at the line of scrimmage, he's getting the Bills out of bad plays and into good plays. I'm not trying to make him out as the next Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but he's much further along than any other rookie."
No disrespect intended toward Russell but here's the rub given six months of hindsight.
Oakland could have had Edwards with any of its first four picks -- picks that turned out to be Russell, tight end Zach Miller and third-round selections defensive end Quentin Moses and tackle Mario Henderson.
Evidently they haven't met some of the Bills fans who are either impossible to impress or do not want to be impressed.
