(March 26, 2003) -- Personal workouts are starting to wind down and the draft order is starting to take shape.

There will be public relations campaigns, led by agents and media people, for clubs to look at different players for the top pick in the NFL draft. I remember vividly how much scrutiny we were under at the Jets when it started to look like we were going to take Keyshawn Johnson, a wide receiver, with the top pick.

The first barrage of criticism was that the only wide receiver taken with the first pick was Irving Fryar in 1984. So how could we ever take a wideout at that spot? At least there was one receiver taken to base part of our decision on.

We were very aware of the history of the top pick. We spent time discussing moving down a few spots or looking at alternate wide receivers if we stayed in the top spot and chose another position. The second pick in that draft was linebacker Kevin Hardy . The third pick was offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden .
