    Let's talk defense

The Answer has a question - What is the deal with this rag tag bunch of misfits and castoffs? Where did they come from? Is this a mirage or does The Corpse actually have a plan?

The thing that scares The Answer the most right now is that this unit is looking a lot like the 2001 Pats - a bunch of no names that give up yards, but hold teams to 3 instead of 7 when it matters and creates a lot of opportunistic turnovers when they are sorely needed.

Here are some subtopics of interest:

    1) John McCargo - This guy is turning into run stuffing animal at the line of scrimmage. And even The Answer is shocked given the fact he pegged him as a major bust and not worth a 1st round pick. Is it any coincidence we are suddenly shutting down the run as this beasts game improves? Furthermore looks like he is by far the best DL out of the 3 first rounders from NC State last year and that is saying a lot.

    2) Pass Defense - anybody still miss Nate Clements? Greer/Toast are shutting down everybody right now. Whitner is also quietly showing why he was a top 10 pick and combination of Simpson/Leonard/Wilson have made plays all year long.

    3) Digi - Sorry Poz fans, but there's a reason whey Digi was #1 on the depth chart pretty much all preseason and there's no guarantees he's giving up the starting middle LB spot next year when Poz returns. This kid is a baller and from this point forward shall be referred to as the Italian Wrecking Ball!

    4) Fewell/The Corpse - Make no mistake about it - The drone without a pulse knows defense, and now we are starting to actually see a semblace of a gameplan with multiple formations and blitzing at the right time. This evil bastard is almost as clever and calculating as Belechik.

    5) Depth - we are a deep unit defensively and when all the guys return from injury this year and next year, combined with inevitable FA's and draft picks we should be a top 5 defense in 2008.

    6) Schobel - The Answer called him out - and his play has been rock solid. Yes he don't have the sacks to justify his contract, but he still makes a lot of plays including forced fumbles, QB pressure that leads to turnover and stopping the run as well. Hopefully a 3 sack game is coming soon - he should be able to pad stats significantly considering we still have 2 games against the dolfellons on the schedule...

Bottom line don't sell this unit short - no matter who the QB is this unit is going to keep us in games the rest of the year and should only get better as the season wears on....

I know some people will cite different numbers like yards givne up, but this defense is limiting scoring.

That, to me, is more important that yards or averages.

The defense has been very good the last couple of weeks. Perry Fewell deserves major props.

Total yards yielded is the one of the most overrated stats in football. A team can easily give up 450 yards yet hold a team to 15 points - we saw that against Denver in week 1.

On the flip side a team can give up 250 yards and let a team score 30+

We knew all along we were going to be a 'bend but don't break' unit - that's what the tampa/cover 2 is all about and two teams have already won a superbowl twice in the last 5 years with that style of defense.

For all the bashing The Corpse and Fewell deserve major props for the job they've done this year - especially considering the copious amount of injuries and all of the so called 'big names' we lost this offseason.
