Bills' offseason moves have put them in thick of playoff race

Based on how active Buffalo has been this offseason, I don’t think there is any doubt that GM Tom Donahoe is positioning the Bills for a major playoff run this season. In fact, I feel so confident about this, I put $20 on the Bills to win it all (at 20-1 odds) at the Rio Suites casino/hotel in Las Vegas last weekend while I was there on vacation.

You might think I’m crazy, but let me explain.

First of all, I must admit to being a Bills fan. Remarkably, though I’ve suffered through many heartaches, I’ve remained optimistic after all these years. Now, I’m not saying that the Bills should be considered one of the favorites to capture the Super Bowl in 2003 — particularly since they play in a brutally tough division against top playoff candidates like Miami, New England and the New York Jets. But I really do think the offseason moves of Donahoe have addressed Buffalo’s most glaring weaknesses and, barring injury, will pay off handsomely this season.

I’ve got to give Donahoe a ton of credit for his moves thus far. With the draft fast approaching in a month, the Bills have managed to shore up their porous defense with several key free-agent pickups. They also have strengthened their special teams. And they’ve gotten rid of expensive veterans like WR Peerless Price, TE Jay Riemersma, FB Larry Centers and OLB Eddie Robinson.

Considering that two years ago, the Bills were in salary-cap hell, were torn apart by a contentious QB controversy and won just three games, Donahoe and his brilliant support staff of Tom Modrak and Dwight Adams have done a remarkable job.
