PHOENIX (March 27, 2003) -- Bill Parcells was late. Fashionably late.
When you're the star attraction of an event -- even a casual breakfast -- you don't file in with everyone else. You make a grand entrance. You ratchet up the audience's sense of anticipation just a little bit higher.
And there clearly was a sense of anticipation Wednesday morning at the annual NFC coaches' gathering with the media at the league's spring meeting this week. Every seat around Parcells' table -- including the one I sat in -- was claimed a good 30 minutes before the scheduled starting time. A couple of seats were even pulled from tables assigned to other coaches in order to squeeze in as many football writers as possible.
Amazingly, the table of Jon Gruden, coach of the Super Bowl-champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was virtually empty and remained that way for several minutes after his on-time arrival.
