In a season that’s quickly becoming filled with them, Coy Wire became the latest feel-good story on the Buffalo Bills defense.
.....Forget, for a second, his stat line in the Bills’ 33-21 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. One quarterback hit isn’t what made the performance noteworthy.
When DiGiorgio went down in the second half with a concussion, Wire filled in at middle linebacker. This from a player who came into the NFL as a safety, likely made the roster for a couple seasons because of his special teams prowess and this year went through training camp at weak side linebacker.
“I’ve been focusing on middle, because I knew if something happened to JD, they’d have to put me in there,” Wire said after the game. “The coaches prepared us well all week and I was confident to step in there.”
With Wire’s help, the Bills held the league’s eighth-ranked offense scoreless in the fourth quarter. A month ago, such an effort was inconceivable. Now, according to Wire, the players in the locker room expect nothing less.
Coach Dick Jauron didn’t update DiGiorgio’s status Monday, leaving open the possibility Wire will start Sunday at Miami.
“We’ve been put in these tough (injury) situations many times this year,” Wire said. “Through all the unfortunate happenings, we’ve had to rally together and be better prepared to adapt and adjust to anything that may happen to us, because of all that we’ve been through. This team is resilient and has a lot of character."
