Republican Chris Collins wins Race for Erie County Executive as Democrat Jim Keane concedes election.
Collins and Keane faced off to replace current County Executive Joel Giambra, who is not running for re-election.
Collins touted himself as the answer to career politicans. He ran his campaign on the strengths of his background as a successful businessman in Erie County, running such local corporations as Zepto Matrix.
"It starts with making Erie County an attractive place for business to locate which begins the repeal of the apprecntice law. It's the most anti-taxpayer, anti-business law we have and it sends the wrong message across the country," said Collins in our 2 On Your Side debate in late October.
Keane ran his candidacy based upon his strength and ability to enact change. He claimed that the current Republican Giambra staff had done only poor things for the county. Keane, no stranger to politics, had many backers and even enlisted the help of former President Bill Clinton in a taped campaign phone message in the final days of the race.
"My plan entails extending the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in downtown Buffalo and creating jobs there that pay $25 an hour to end the drain brain and create the jobs that will help keep our college grads here," said Keane in that same debate.
If Collins keeps his campaign promise, he will save the county at least one salary. He has promised to only accept a $1 salary until the hard control board that oversees the county's finances is no more.
Collins now faces a tough task heading into his new role. The county's control board has rejected Giambra's four-year spending plan, saying it underestimates the amount of money coming in and going out. It may fall on Collins shoulders to come up with a new plan as soon as he enters office.

Haven't had enough of Giambra-type "Reforms"?
So you go and vote for the same thing....again? :shakeno:
CNN was interviewing some republican broads from Ohio:
Did you vote for Bush in 2004?
"Yea, but we thought he would do better."
"Yea, we want the war ended."
"Yea, we need economic growth. We're losing our jobs and our homes."
So you're voting Democratic in the next election?
"Oh no...they don't have any good candidates."
The stupidity of the American populace never ceases to amaze me.
