San Francisco defensive coordinator Jim Mora Jr., one of the runners-up to Dennis Erickson for the 49ers head coaching job, has agreed to a one-year extension that will keep him with the club through the 2004 season.

Regarded by many as one of the NFL's best young defensive minds, Mora interviewed for the head coach position after Steve Mariucci was fired, and was one of four known finalists until club officials surprised nearly everyone by hiring Erickson instead.

The junior Mora is the son of former New Orleans and Indianapolis head coach Jim Mora.

Financial details of the one-year contract extension were not available, but the deal is believed to catapult Mora into the top group of best-compensated defensive coordinators. The league's highest-paid defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin of Tampa Bay, earns $1.7 annually under his new contract.
