So how much will his disastrous performance in Wednesday's on-campus workout hurt Arizona State defensive end Terrell Suggs? Hard to say. But it's fair to point out that several teams were flabbergasted at how poorly he ran and, even more so, how his nervousness transformed into high anxiety. Suggs was certainly sluggish, failing to get into the coveted 4.6-range other defensive ends have posted in their workouts, and didn't appear very strong. "No excuse," said one personnel director who attended the workout. "He looked like a guy who didn't take this seriously." That said, even if Suggs had collected those 24 sacks he registered in 2002 lining up against a mannequin, it would be enough to tempt teams to scrutinize him closely on videotape. It is certainly likely that Suggs cost himself some money, and fell several spots in the first round, but he is probably still a top 10 selection. And maybe even top six, since the sack-challenged Arizona Cardinals (just 65 sacks combined in the past three seasons) would have to consider Suggs if he dropped to their spot in the round.

Then again, don't be shocked if the Texans poke around to see just what it might take to land the No. 1 overall choice from Cincinnati, which clearly would prefer to deal back a few spots. The conventional wisdom for months has been that Charley Casserly would try to move back in the first round and collect additional choices. But the Texans are smitten with Michigan State wide receiver Charles Rogers, feeling he could be the deep threat for David Carr for years to come, and might try to get into position to grab the draft's premier offensive playmaker. Since the Detroit Lions are expected to take Rogers with the second overall selection, the Texans would have to leapfrog them, and that means dealing with Cincinnati for the top pick.

Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Al may have the best Hidden Gem LB prospect in America. Brenden Givan, a 6'2", 238-pounder from Birmingham, has been making some noise in scouting circles of late. After reviewing his film and looking at his workout numbers, it's quite obvious what the stir is about. Givan racked up 91 tackles, 18 TFL, 11 sacks, 2 INT, and a forced fumble this past season. He had 13 sacks the previous season and has led the team in tackles since his arrival. What's even more impressive is that he possesses a rare combination of size, speed(4.54-4.58), athlticism, and strength. He's still raw and needs to be coached, but his upside potential is tremendous. Keep your eyes on him, as he is someone that will likely be in a camp and fighting for a roster spot.

Tennessee Pro Day... The University of Tennessee held it's second pro day recently and according to Matt Gambill, of All Pro Scouting, via KFFL, WR Kelley Washington, 6'3",225lbs, ran a 4.08 in the short shuttle, 6.86 in the three-cone drill and 11.48 in the long shuttle . He also looked excellent in receiving drills. Washington is a gifted athlete but due to injuries and lack of experience at WR opinion on him varies greatly. Some believe he should be a high to mid first round pick while others see him as a second or third rounder. Besides Washington DT Rashad Moore, 6'2", 322 lbs, ran a 7.59 three-cone drill, 4.77 short shuttle, broad jumped 9'1 ½" and had a vertical leap of 33" Additionally he had 18 reps of 225 pounds. LB Eddie Moore, 6' 0 3/8, 231 lbs ran 4.61 and 4.71 in the 40-yard dash, 4.39 in the short shuttle and 7.10 in three-cone drills. His vertical leaps were 37" and 38 and did 16 reps at 225 lbs.

Rien Long...… Today is the day Rien Long,6'5",300lbs, is to work out for pro scouts. Long won the Outland Trophy and was seen as one of the better DT prospects in a draft deep in defensive tackles. Especially tantalizing was/is his ability to rush the passer from the inside. However questions about injuries and poor early workouts have left his status as an elite prospect muddled. Today's workout is, therefore, very important to teams looking for a DT in the early rounds. Long could be drafted anywhere from the mid first to the mid to late second depending on how he performs in workouts leading up to the draft.

Suggs shouldn't slide too far on Draft Day
By Mike Wilkening (mwilkening@pfwmedia.com)

Terrell Suggs wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Arizona State’s pro workout day just so happened to fall as the NFL owners' meetings were winding to a close in Phoenix on Wednesday. The eyes and stopwatches of the league were all on Suggs, a gregarious defensive end/linebacker who came out of the Combine with momentum, even though he hadn’t worked out.

The running and the lifting would come here. A good performance, and he might just sneak back onto Cincinnati’s short list of candidates to be picked No. 1.

Instead, Terrell Suggs had, in the opinion of most NFL observers, a bad day.

Scouts reportedly clocked Suggs in the 4.7-4.9 range Wednesday. The expectation was Suggs, who some envision as a 3-4 linebacker, could run a 4.6.

NFL PROSPECT TIDBITS

Tennessee WR Kelley Washington was clocked at 4.08 in the short shuttle, 6.86 in the three-cone drill and 11.48 in the long shuttle during another workout at Tennessee. He also looked excellent in receiving drills. Washington's stock appears to be going up now that questions about his neck appear to be slowly disappearing. His 6-foot-2 1/2 and 215 pound frame is ideal for teams looking for a big, physical receiver that can serve as either a possession wideout or simply out-muscle smaller defensive backs. His time, as noted here previously, in the 40-yard dash was also a very respectable 4.42-4.45.

Pittsburgh LB Gerald Hayes was clocked at 4.66-4.71 in the 40-yard dash during workouts at Pittsburgh on Monday, March 24.

Tennessee DT Rashad Moore weighed in at 322 pounds during Tennessee's Pro Day. He had a 7.59 three-cone drill, 4.77 short shuttle, 9-foot-1 1/2 broad jump, 33" vertical jump and did 18 reps in bench press drills.

Alabama A&M LB/DE Robert Mathis worked out in front of sixteen teams on Monday, March 24. He measured in at 6-foot-0 3/8 and 228 pounds. He was clocked at 4.53 in the 40-yard dash and looked fluid in LB drills. In other drills, he had a 32" vertical jump and did 22 reps in bench press drills. He'll have another workout on April 2.

Ohio University RB Chad Brinker, during a workout on March 22, measured in at 5-foot-9 3/4 and 211 pounds. He was clocked at 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash while running outdoors in cool temperatures with a stiff cross wind on turf. He had a 34.5" vertical jump, 3.96 short shuttle, 10' broad jump, 6.9 three-cone drill, 11.31 long shuttle and did 20 reps in bench press drills.

Tennessee LB Eddie Moore measured in at 6-foot-0 3/8 and 231 pounds. He was clocked at 4.61 and 4.71 in the 40-yard dash, 4.39 in the short shuttle and 7.10 in three-cone drills. He also had a 37" and 38" vertical jump and did 16 reps in bench press drills.

UNLV OG Tony Terrell measured in at 6-foot-3 1/4 and 316 pounds. He had a 8.01 three-cone drill, 4.79 short shuttle, 28 1/2" vertical jump and 8-foot-5 broad jump.

Tennessee CB Willie Miles was clocked at 4.31 in the 40-yard dash.

UNLV FB Steven Costa measured in at 6-foot-1 and 236 pounds. He had a 4.54 and 4.55 40-yard dash, 34 1/2" vertical jump and did 24 reps in bench press drills.

Pittsburgh CB Torrie Cox was clocked at 4.37-4.47 in the 40-yard dash during workouts at Pittsburgh on Monday, March 24.

Tennessee WR/KR Leonard Scott was clocked at 4.25 in the 40-yard dash and had a 40 1/2" vertical jump.

Arkansas Pine Bluff OT Courtney Van Buren, during a workout in front of numerous teams, measured in at 6-foot-5 7/10 and 365.3 pounds. During the workout on grass, he ran a 5.25 40-yard dash, had a 4.91 20-yard shuttle, 1.8 10-yard shuttle, 7.88-7.94 three-cone drill and bench pressed 28 reps during drills.

UNLV QB Jason Thomas measured in at 6-foot-3 5/8 and 242 pounds. He was clocked at 4.86 and 4.90 in the 40-yard dash, had a 7.35 three-cone drill, 4.48 short shuttle, 9-foot-6 broad jump and 32" vertical jump.

COMPENSATION SELECTIONS AWARDED

The NFL gave 32 compensatory selections to 15 teams in this year's NFL Draft. Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The big winners this year would have to be the Baltimore Ravens, who landed an extra two picks in the first five rounds.

- As of right now, the Bengals are saying that they're not sure Carson Palmer is a better prospect than Kyle Boller and Chris Simms! With no mention of Byron Leftwich. While it's a smokescreen, it's nice to see the Bengals playing their cards right for a change.

- Penn State's pro day went well with Larry Johnson running as low as 4.4, Bryant Johnson as low as 4.37, Bryan Scott as low as 4.37 and Michael Haynes in the 4.6 range. Why do I have a feeling that Joe Pa would've run in the 4.5's?

- Texas QB Chris Simms looked very good working out on his own for several NFL teams.

- Good news for a pair of sleeper WR prospects. Grand Valley State's David Kircus ran the 40 in the 4.47 range and Gustavus Adolphus's Ryan Hoag finished fourth in the NCAA Div.-III Indoor Track Championships

- A pair of Buckeyes really helped themselves at their pro day. MLB Matt Wilhelm ran a 4.57 40 and OLB Cie Grant ran in the 4.3's.
