Throw out the statistics. I'm really starting to dig the long-term future of this defense we're building in Buffalo.
I dare say that come next offseason, I don't think we need to spend a lot of money on this unit for it to be one of the league's better defenses.
I think we're developing some guys who are turning into quality starters, and some guys that were pressed into playing now have proven they will be great role players next year.
I thought depth was a huge concern, and it is right NOW, but come next season I think depth becomes a strength on this team.
On the line, I think McCargo overtakes Tripplett by next season. Denney (when healthy) and Hargrove provide excellent depth. Kyle Wiliams I'm still not sold on long-term, but he's getting better every week. If we make ANY move on the DL, it may be to try and get either an upgrade or a legit 1-gap DT to rotate with him. But I don't think it's half the priority it seemed months ago.
With the LB's, DiGorgio will provide legitmiate depth behind Poz, Crowell and Ellison. IF they make any "notable" moves with the defense via FA or draft, it may be to get a stronger WLB than Ellison. In fact, this is one position I guarentee gets addressed during the offseason.
Shockingly, I've become fine with Greer and McGee as our starting CB's. I don't think they need to spend/draft early at this spot anymore. If anything, maybe look for a better #3 than Kiwi, IF Youboty isn't the answer (and I think he could be, but I'm worried he can't stay on the field anymore).
With the safety spot, George Wilson has been a revelation. We go next year with Simpson/Whitner and now we have a good backup to come and give us reps.
Overall, I think Crowell is becoming a star LB, and that Whitner and McCargo are on the verge as well. Schobel (statistically having a bad year) and Kelsay do still make plays, and Poz can become a very good LB. Greer has been maybe the MVP of this defense the past month.
Overall, I think this is a very good unit, and if the Bills spend big money next offseason, I hope it's on offensive playmakers. I don't think this unit needs much, except maybe a stud WLB over Ellison.
