I'm Really Starting To Like Our Defense

Throw out the statistics. I'm really starting to dig the long-term future of this defense we're building in Buffalo.

I dare say that come next offseason, I don't think we need to spend a lot of money on this unit for it to be one of the league's better defenses.

I think we're developing some guys who are turning into quality starters, and some guys that were pressed into playing now have proven they will be great role players next year.

I thought depth was a huge concern, and it is right NOW, but come next season I think depth becomes a strength on this team.

On the line, I think McCargo overtakes Tripplett by next season. Denney (when healthy) and Hargrove provide excellent depth. Kyle Wiliams I'm still not sold on long-term, but he's getting better every week. If we make ANY move on the DL, it may be to try and get either an upgrade or a legit 1-gap DT to rotate with him. But I don't think it's half the priority it seemed months ago.

With the LB's, DiGorgio will provide legitmiate depth behind Poz, Crowell and Ellison. IF they make any "notable" moves with the defense via FA or draft, it may be to get a stronger WLB than Ellison. In fact, this is one position I guarentee gets addressed during the offseason.

Shockingly, I've become fine with Greer and McGee as our starting CB's. I don't think they need to spend/draft early at this spot anymore. If anything, maybe look for a better #3 than Kiwi, IF Youboty isn't the answer (and I think he could be, but I'm worried he can't stay on the field anymore).

With the safety spot, George Wilson has been a revelation. We go next year with Simpson/Whitner and now we have a good backup to come and give us reps.

Overall, I think Crowell is becoming a star LB, and that Whitner and McCargo are on the verge as well. Schobel (statistically having a bad year) and Kelsay do still make plays, and Poz can become a very good LB. Greer has been maybe the MVP of this defense the past month.

Overall, I think this is a very good unit, and if the Bills spend big money next offseason, I hope it's on offensive playmakers. I don't think this unit needs much, except maybe a stud WLB over Ellison.

I pretty much agree with your entire theme. I would like to see them continue to look for depth pass rushing specialists that can be rotated in at DT and DE but other than that we should spend most of our energy on the offense in the offseason.

Re: I'm Really Starting To Like Our Defense

      great post pat.
i really agree that the defense has vastly exceeded my expectations and is showing a lot of promise for the future. i agree also that an upgrade over williams would be a big step and would hopefully go a long way towards preventing those gaudy rushing numbers that they sometimes allow such as last week. williams has played well though and definitely deserves to be in the rotation even if an upgrade is found.
one thing i'll be watching for is to see that greer and hargrove are both brought back. greer has had a break through year and i think has a lot of promise to be a plus player in this system. likewise, i really like what i've seen from hargrove at end and think he will eventually evolve into a much more physical presence than either schobel or kelsay. they've already put a lot of money into de's so they might not want to sign him but i think that would be a big loss.
ellison regressed from last year in my eyes and i hope they can find someone better. it was totally off the radar two months ago but i could even see them going LB with their first pick in 08 if the wr/te/dt they want is not there.

Have Topo Gigio compete with Ellison for the WLB job next year... I think the pizza man may beat him out. I like him. Another undrafted quality pickup.

Poz isn't a given at MLB next year...He may be the one moved to the weak side, depending on his improvement in the mental department.

I'd still like to see a premium end or tackle added at some point, and we certainly have room to improve at cornerback depth-wise.

We need to draft a CB and DT high, regardless of what we currently have.

But the main focus in the draft should obviously be on the offensive sire of the ball. We really need a playmaker at TE and a decent blocking FB. And we obviously need to address the Center position through FA.

                      Good point.

                      2008 = Poz-DiG-Crowell? (Depth: Ellison, Haggan, Wire)

I agree..especially with crowell. I still think we need another good DT in that rotation...we still can not stop the run well....and if we are making a wish list another CB would not hurt. I still think if Degiorgio kept improving we could shift Poz to his natural OLB spot....and have sick LB's.

I agree with you on FA should be for offensive skill players as they are more proven. The bills however usually go for those second tier guys at wr as they dont spend the $$.
