Packers match Detroit's offer for Diggs

GREEN BAY, Wis. (March 28, 2003) -- The Green Bay Packers will match Detroit's offer for linebacker Na'il Diggs, coach Mike Sherman said.

Diggs, a restricted free agent, recently signed an offer sheet from the Detroit Lions.

The Packers had until March 29 to match the offer or let Diggs go to Detroit in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick as compensation.

Sherman said he had an "excellent conversation" with Diggs on the morning of March 28, and that Diggs looks forward to playing for the Packers in 2003.

"There have been some sources out there that have suggested that Na'il Diggs was less than happy as a Green Bay Packer," Sherman said. The coach added that there was no hint of that in their conversation, "so I do not put much stock in secondhand comments."

Diggs, 24, started the past three years for the Packers. In 16 games at strongside linebacker last season, he had three sacks, two interceptions and 111 tackles.
