'Firing' Fairchild may not be an option

Should Sonny Lubick, as expected, step down as Colorado State University's football coach, a number of suitors could line up hoping to succeed him.

Several former CSU players - most with ties to Lubick - could be among the prominent prospects for the job. However, several other coaches - including at least one with a tie to athletic director Paul Kowalczyk, could find themselves in the mix.

Three former Lubick assistants also could figure prominently in a search.

Steve Fairchild, who was on Lubick's original staff and worked his way up to offensive coordinator, has been an offensive coordinator the past five seasons in the NFL - the past two for the Buffalo Bills. Fairchild was a standout quarterback for CSU in the 1980s and has strong ties to the talent-rich San Diego recruiting area.

How do you replace a legend? It's a job too big for any single coach.

But picking up the telephone and making calls to Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild or Bowling Green head coach Gregg Brandon, both of whom have extensive ties either to CSU or this state, would be a wise place to start.

Considering Jauron's offensive philosophy is pretty much an unknown, the field to replace Fairchild (should he leave) could be a pretty big one.
