Bucs use cap room to give Oben new 4-year deal

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday accomplished one of their biggest offseason goals by signing starting offensive tackle Roman Oben to a new four-year contract, ESPN.com has learned.

The restructuring of Keyshawn Johnson's contract provided the Bucs with about $2.5 million in salary cap space, allowing them to finally hammer out an agreement with Oben. Financial details of the seven-year veteran's contract were not immediately available.

Even though coach Jon Gruden and offensive line assistant Bill Muir have made it a priority to upgrade Tampa Bay's blocking unit, they believed that the 30-year-old Oben was one of the players who had to be retained. The Super Bowl champions had been attempting to re-sign him for several weeks.
