Besides the fact that the Cover 2 is a proven and successful scheme, it also brings another dimension to a football team that I have just realized recently.
The Cover 2 allows a team to be competitve for a long period of time and allows a team to retain its best players and for this reason:
For a cover 2 to be successful there are only certain positions that you need to invest heavily in, those are, DEs, 1 dominant DT ( another can always be found in the draft to fit the scheme) a MLB and a SS.
CBs are the most expensive position after QB and for this scheme there is no premium on CBs. OLBs are also a dime a dozen in this scheme, all you need are faster, lighter LBs who can tackle and those arent hard to find or teach either.
FS is also a position you can sacrifice if needed. All our FS needs is a bit of size and speed.
Take a look at Indi for example,,,, they manage to retain Freeney, Manning, Wayne, Harrison, Clark, Brackett, Saturday, Diem, and Glenn (before he retired) and still be in good cap shape. I bet they will be able to sign Bob Sanders to a new deal soon as well. Thats because their scheme allows them to fill other positions (which other teams pay a premium for like CB) with draft picks and younger, cheaper players.
In the end this Cap/Scheme advantage will allow them to be as close to a non-capped team as possible and remain competitive for 10 years assuming of course the right draft picks are made. So far so good on the Levy drafts!
Here's to the next 10 years! Go Bills!
