Goodwin remaining in Minnesota as backup tight end

Unrestricted free agent Hunter Goodwin has decided to remain with the Minnesota Vikings after rejecting an offer from the Oakland Raiders that would allowed him to compete for their starting tight end job.

Goodwin's two-year deal with the Vikings, believed to be worth about $1.5 million, was agreed upon in principle Tuesday and should be signed sometime this week.

The 30-year-old Goodwin had been pursued by the Raiders for several weeks but opted to remain with the Vikings as a backup -- which they consider an important role in their offense. Oakland was trying to add another tight end to its mix, given that starter Roland Williams likely will open the 2003 season on the physically unable to perform list because of offseason toe and knee surgeries.
