    Fassel wants Dayne to call

EAST RUTHERFORD - Jim Fassel was back at the office Monday after a week at the NFL owners' meetings, and the Giants' coach was quick to reiterate his vow to "get to the bottom" of the Ron Dayne situation.

Fassel also made it clear that he is not about to let one apparently disgruntled player dampen the positive atmosphere surrounding his team.

"I've got a lot of things to do and [talking to Dayne] is not the first thing I've tried to take care of," Fassel said. "I've got the guys here I've got to take care of."

The fourth-year running back is the only player unaccounted for since the Giants began their off-season conditioning program March 24. Dayne informed the organization that he wouldn't attend through his agent Terry Lavenstein, who earlier this off-season requested permission from the Giants to seek a trade for the seldom-used player. The Giants, meanwhile, have worked out numerous free agent running backs, including former Jaguar Stacey Mack. Sources indicate Mack, a short-yardage specialist, is likely to sign with the Giants unless another team offers him a starting position.
