With Bills offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild leaving Buffalo to assume the head-coaching job at Colorado State, it didn’t long for a potential replacement to lobby for the vacancy. Bills QB coach Turk Schonert publicly proclaimed his desire for the job earlier this week. While head coach Dick Jauron reacted favorably to Schonert’s comments, saying that he sees the ambition of his assistants as being a good thing, we hear that Schonert should be considered a long shot to land the job. Schonert has been an NFL QB coach on and off since 1992 without ever serving as a coordinator, and his kinship with the oft-criticized Fairchild would make him an unpopular choice around Buffalo. However, sources caution not to completely write him off. If anyone currently on the staff has a chance at the job, it’s Schonert. He’s well-liked throughout the clubhouse and has developed a particularly close relationship with rookie QB, and fellow Stanford alum, Trent Edwards.
