McGahee back on field... Miami RB Willis McGahee, who underwent reconstructive surgery on an injured knee early in January, was back on the field yesterday taking part in a limited private workout with New England. McGahee reportedly caught some passes and did some other drills, but didn't run. McGahee will have a more formal workout just prior to the draft on April 26th. Meanwhile, McGahee's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has informed all 32 teams in the NFL that his client will sign with the team that drafts him later this month. There are some concerns around the league that McGahee, who was projected to be a top 5 pick prior to the injury, will be asking to be paid like an elite selection wherever he is ultimately selected and if he doesn't get it he would sit out the upcoming season and re-enter the 2004 draft

Chiefs thinking defense with #1 pick... It should come as no surprise that Kansas City, which had the worst defense in the NFL last fall, will be looking hard at defensive players when they make their first pick, the 16th overall, this April. In fact, all 19 of the prospects the Chiefs have invited to Kansas City for pre-draft, on-site interviews, play on the defensive side of the ball. Of the 19, four have first-round creditentials including Oklahoma State DT Kevin Williams, Oklahoma CB Andre Woolfolk, Nebraska DE Chris Kelsay and possibly Colorado DE Tyler Brayton, one of the faster rising players in this year's draft. For the record, each NFL team is allowed to bring in up to 20 out-of- town players for interviews in the final weeks leading up to the draft. Actual workouts, however, are not permitted. Teams can also invite in for interviews as many players as it wants from schools classified as local to that team. http://www.gbnreport.com/index.htm

Morton case to be decided Monday...RB/KR Chad Morton should have a better idea where he will be playing in 2003 on Monday. That's when abritrator Richard Bloch will make his decision on the grievance submitted by the NFL Players Association regarding Morton. Morton, a Jets' restricted free agent, had signed an offer sheet with Washington which the Jets had matched. The NFL had ruled, however, that the Jets did not have to match several clauses in the Redskins' offer sheet and that is what the NFLPA is appealing. If the arbritrator does not uphold the NFL's ruling, Morton could be awarded to the Redskins, or more likely, would give the Jets another chance to match the full offer sheet. If, in the latter scenario, the Jets did not match, they would receive a 5th round pick in this year's draft as compensation; the Jets' would also get a #5 pick if Morton were awarded to the Redskins outright.

Much has been made lately of the possibility of the Cincinnati Bengals bucking conventional wisdom and selecting a player other than USC's Carson Palmer with the initial pick of the draft. The argument was first brought to public attention here when in early March I predicted the Bengals would ignore the long term benefits of a quarterback and instead add the instant credibility of Arizona State's Terrell Suggs. While adding a player of Palmer's ability is certainly a logical move, the theory that NFL coaches no longer have the luxury of waiting for young quarterbacks to develop was the primary rationale behind my selection. Instead, a prospect with "instant impact" capabilities much like Suggs, Kansas State's Terence Newman, or Michigan State's Charles Rogers might make the team significantly better more quickly - thus earning the coaching staff another year or two to develop other players, perhaps even a franchise quarterback.

Not surprisingly, the "instant impact" #1 pick theory has caught on nationally and Suggs, Newman, and Rogers are all now receiving plenty of media hype as potential number one picks. Expect Suggs and Rogers to continue to earn hype, expect the buzz around Newman to die down, at least in terms of his being the first pick of the draft. ...MORE... PACE TO TEXANS?

There's a rumor making the rounds that the Rams might trade left tackle Orlando Pace to the Houston Texans for the third overall pick in the 2003 draft.

The feeling in some circles is that the Rams have paid Kyle Turley too much to be a right tackle, and that he'll move to the left side if the Rams move the disgruntled Pace out of town.

We asked Howard Balzer of USA Today Sportsweekly and RamsNation.com for his take on the issue, and he told us that such a move wouldn't surprise him. He added, however, that there's no indication that Pace is negotiating a contract with the Texans, which would be a prerequisite to any trade.

Pace, an unrestricted free agent, wears the franchise tag in St. Louis. As a result, he's free to negotiate with other teams. Though, technically, the compensation for signing a franchised player is two first-round draft choices, most teams accept less than that if a deal can be struck.

The other side of the coin here is the Texans. Adding Pace surely would beef up their offensive line. But they have Tony Boselli and Zach Wiegert penciled in as left tackle and right tackle, respectively. Wiegert could be moved to guard, but neither Boselli nor Pace would be thrilled with the notion of moving to the right side.

If the trade happens, then, Boselli could be nudged out.

With the third overall pick, the Rams could go in several different directions. Receiver Andre Johnson would fuel rumors that Isaac Bruce's days in the dome are numbered. Defensive end Terrell Suggs or cornerback Terence Newman would add punch to a defense that slid backwards in 2002.

And don't forget that coach Mike Martz has hinted at the possibility of drafting a quarterback in the first round.
