23. Buffalo Bills (f/ATL):
Taylor Jacobs, WR, Florida
The Bills landed this pick in the deal that sent wideout Peerless Price to Buffalo and after filling their need at defensive tackle in free agency with Sam Adams they look elsewhere. While they have faith in second year man Josh Reed being able to step in and start in place of Price they also need to bring in some insurance. At the very least the polished Jacobs will be an ideal #3 man in Buffalo, which is essentially a starter in that high powered offense.

23. Buffalo Bills (from Atlanta Falcons)

9-6-1

+88 Pt. Diff.
William Joseph

DT
Miami Unspectacular play throughout his season season is likely going to drop Joseph a little further than most would expect. That said, he is a terrific athlete and has the size to both handle the 2 gap responsibilities as well as make plays. Buffalo is desperate for someone to take some pressure off Pat Williams and Joseph is enough of a playmaker to get the job done.

COMMENTS: This draft choice was acquired from the Atlanta Falcons in the WR Peerless Price trade.

23. Buffalo Bills (from Atlanta) - Rien Long DT, Washington State
Sam Adams is an upgrade, but the Bills still need to add a solid, young defensive tackle. Rien Long was named winner of the 2002 Outland Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation's top defensive lineman.

Rd2
16. (48) Buffalo Bills - Jeff Faine, C Notre Dame
Center isn't a major priority for the Bills, but Faine has first-round talent and would be an immediate improvement. He would be a steal with the 48th overall pick.

Rd3
15. (79) Buffalo Bills - Shurron Pierson, DE/OLB South Florida (Fla)
The Bills defense could use a good situational pass rusher.

23(23).Buffalo Bills (From Atlanta)

Dennis Weathersby Cornerback Oregon State

This is a hard pick to figure out. The Bills really like defensive end Chris Kelsay from Nebraska but they feel he could be around for their choice in the second round (as well as Cory Redding). It is a fact that you need 3 solid corners in the NFL today and Weathersby could come in and contribute as a #3 cornerback immediately.

Other possibilities: Chris Kelsay DE Nebraska, *Johnathan Sullivan DT Georgia, Kenny Peterson DE Ohio State.

DT Jonathon Sullivan Georgia
Buffalo got a first round pick back after losing Peerless Price to Atlanta. That's a tough loss, but the Bills should be able to improve their D as a result. The recent addition of LB Takeo Spikes is a great start. By drafting Sullivan, the Bills get a stud to anchor the D line. The Buffalo secondary will be addressed in the 2nd.

23.Buffalo Bills: Jonathan Sullivan, DT, Georgia: The Bills have done a terrific job of improving their defense in free agency and with the selection of Sullivan, they get even better, younger and add more depth along the defensive line. Buffalo does have Pat Williams and newly signed Sam Adams inside which should be a fine duo, but neither guy in his prime and both tend to wear down in games, so adding Sullivan would give the Bills a good rotation guy for the time being and an eventual starter.

Round 1

23. Buffalo Bills(from Atlanta)- KELLEY WASHINGTON WR TENNESSEE- We'll call this my surprise pick of the 1st round. The Bills have done a great job of improving their defense through free agency, but they need to compensate for the loss of, arguably, their best offensive player in Peerless Price. If you look at a "standard" draftboard, perhaps Bryant Johnson of Penn St. is next up at WR, but with Eric Moulds and Josh Reed at WR, the Bills can afford to roll the dice on the talented Washington. His campus workouts were dynamite, he's healthy and this is a gamble that would probably pay off for the Bills. OTHER POSSIBILITIES-Bryant Johnson, Jason Witten

Round 2
48. Buffalo Bills- AL JOHNSON C WISCONSIN- It's a toss-up whether Johnson or Faine is the best center in this draft, but Al is excellent value here. OTHER POSSIBILITIES- Antwan Peek, Julian Battle, Angelo Crowell

Round 3
79. Buffalo Bills- MUSA SMITH RB GEORGIA- Yes, the Bills have Travis Henry but little behind him and what a great change of pace back Smith would make.Mr Hyde's Mock Draft (http://www.mrhyde.org/MockDraft.html)

Michael Haynes
DE | Penn State
6' 3" | 280 lbs. | 4.70

Team Needs: DE | DT | CB | OLB
Comments: Uses his hands well is able to speed rush and power rush effectively. Hard-working and intelligent. Athletic and relentless defensive end that stops the run or rushes the passer with equal effectiveness. Has a great burst of closing speed and flashes on the scene.

The Latest: Had a bad combine posting a 4.88 40 while pulling his quad muscle. At the Penn State Pro Day, brought his time down to 4.70. Did 23 reps of the 225 lbs at the combine.
Options: With the trade of Peerless Price to Atlanta, the Bills get to beef up their defensive line.

23.BUFFALO BILLS
KENNY PETERSON, DT, Ohio State
The Bills need a quick, penetrating DT to complement Pat Williams' strong run stuffing. Peterson may be the most athletic DT in the draft and with proper coaching he can become an excellent player.

23. Buffalo (from Atlanta/Peerless Price trade) 8-8-0 121-135-0 .473
Taylor Jacobs, WR, Florida -- Prior to the trade for Price, VU had heard the rumors that this pick could be traded to Buffalo. Prior to Washington trading its first-round pick to the Jets to sign Laveranues Coles, many thought Jacobs would go to the Redskins at No. 13. The Bills lost a lot when it let Price go, but got value for the pick. With Eric Moulds as the established guy and young Josh Reed, who would have been a Viking had Buffalo not taken him before Minnesota in last year's draft, they have a good start. Jacobs could be the guy who fills the role Price had -- or the role Reed had early last year. Buffalo's success will be predicated on keeping its offense as strong as possible. Jacobs lets the offense continue to run at peak efficiency for much less money than Price would have cost.

Kenny Peterson DT Ohio State 6-4 290 lbs. 4.89
TEAM NEEDS: DL | DB | OL | LB
POSITIVES: Good athlete that is quick of the ball and extremely strong for his size. Can get into the backfield and create havok. Can play the nose spot or tackle spot.
NEGATIVES: Does not have great size for an NFL interior defensive lineman.

23. Buffalo Bills (via Atlanta Falcons) - William Joseph, DT, Miami

The Bills made a very shrewd move in the franchising and subsequent trading of WR Peerless Price. That gave them Atlanta's first round pick, which they can use to upgrade their defensive line.

For Buffalo fans in 2002, frustration was a common feeling. The Bills offense was high-octane and explosive, but in contrast their defense was porous and unable to effectively stop the rush or the pass. Joseph is a Top 15 talent who I project falling due to the glut of high-end DTs and various team needs above this spot. Buffalo would be very smart to snap up Joseph if he's available here

Update from NFL Draft Countdown:

23: Michael Haynes, DE, Penn St

The Bills landed this pick in the deal that sent wideout Peerless Price to Buffalo and after filling their need at defensive tackle in free agency with Sam Adams they look elsewhere. Haynes led the Big Ten in sacks as a senior and while he isn't overly impressive in workouts that kind of production is hard to ignore.

Also has second and thrid round picks this time:

48. Buffalo Bills: Brandon Lloyd, WR, Illinois

Will help replace Peerless Price and push Josh Reed.

79. Buffalo Bills: L.J. Smith, TE, Rutgers

Drew Bledsoe loved to throw to Ben Coates in New England.

23. Buffalo Bills (from Atlanta) - Dewayne White - DE - Louisville
[Trade involves the exclusive rights to Peerless Price - WR] Suddenly the Bills are serious contenders for the AFC title. They have filled some tremendous holes on defense and did some great work in the offseason to build a contender.
48. Buffalo Bills - Terrence Holt - S - NC StateBR>
The Bills have done basically everything possible to improve the team and make it into a legitimate challenger for the AFC Title. I am just not completely sold on their safeties - specifically Coy Wire. Holt will need a year or so to learn the nuances of the NFL but will stand to become an excellent S in this league.
79. Buffalo Bills - Anthony Adams - DT - Penn State
Adams will provide the Bills with some stability up front - and could team with another Adams to make this defense pretty scary in its own right.
111. Buffalo Bills - Gus Felder - OG - Penn State
An underrated guard from the Big Ten. Setting him up next to Mike Williams could make that Buffalo offense run very smoothly. He's a big, strong guard - not very quick, but he's a load to get around. Felder will allow plenty of time for Drew Bledsoe to pick defenses apart.
151. Buffalo Bills - Colin Cole - DT - Iowa
A big guy to run upfront for the Bills. Cole helped Iowa steamroll through the Big Ten. He's a quiet player - but he does his job very well - evidenced by his production this year.
187. Buffalo Bills - LaBrandon Toefield - RB - LSU
He's an injury concern - but with Travis Henry he could emerge as a stud third down back - he has the talent - he just needs to stay healthy.
210. Buffalo Bills - Chris Vance - WR - Ohio State
Quite possibly will lose Peerless Price to free agency - so they need to reload. Although Josh Reed is a very capable #2 wide receiver behind Eric Moulds - they need some depth at the wide receiver position as Charles Johnson and Andre Rone are not exactly guys to hang you hat on as the third and fourth receivers. Vance is a solid wideout with good hands who could easily excel playing the slot position.
