    Edwards Salary

Trent Edwards ended his rookie season as starters for Buffalo, a third-round pick out of Stanford, earned a base salary of $285,000 and an overall salary of $916,000, including bonuses, last season. Troy Smith, started final Ravens game and was selected in the 5th round, earned $285,000 in base pay and a total of $390,000 with bonuses.

How did Edwards earn so much if his base salary is so low?

What's the bench sittin' Notre Dame QB making in Cleveland?

Ralph may have a got a steal? We'll see.

FYI-Kevin Kolb, a second-round pick, was the third quarterback picked last season. The Eagles are paying him $4.285 million over four seasons and he hasn't even played yet.

This alone is reason number one that even if all things were equal with Trent and JP, it would be JP getting traded.

PS- They're not equal anyway.. and in my personal opinion, with better talent and experience Trent will be a Top 10 QB in this league.

I'm sure there were bonuses tied to number of starts. And the Bills saved $5M by not allowing JP to start a certain number of games.

Imaginary $5M until someone proves otherwise. And JP ought to be blaming Patriots with not getting money not Bills for if had not been injured he probably would not have been pulled.

Your bonus is usually based on the round you were picked in the draft!!!!

There could have been performance bonuses in his contract based on the number of starts, wins, passing attempts, making the All-Rookie team (which he did), etc. Many contracts have performance bonuses written into them, some of which are unlikely to be earned (there is even a name and category for these bonuses) by the player, but which circumstances might allow him to earn.

Even though Edwards signing bonus was dictated by the round that he was drafted in, he played so much that he may very well have met the requirements of the performance bonus clauses written into his contract. IMHO that's probably what happened.
Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. And, thus it was that they surrendered their freedom; not with a bang, but without even a whimper.

You are correct usually performance bonuses come with the QB, WR, RB positions and sometimes Defense depending where they were drafted. But I know for 100% sure that bonuses are based on being picked round by round then being a undrafted FA....

This is kind of ridiculous though, if Trent proves to be our guy we will have to renegotiate his contract after 08 anyways.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
                  It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

I wonder if Edwards will receive an escalator in 2008 based on the number of starts he had.

                          $916,000 - $285,000 = $531,000 (signing bonus as cash to cap and NLTBE's)
