We hear that at least one NFL director of college scouting believes there are 13 sure-fire, can't-miss prospects in the 2003 draft. The rest fall squarely into the "who knows" category, and their ultimate abilities won't be determined until they line up against NFL-caliber competition on a regular basis.

As to the cream of the crop, seven are on offense, six on defense.

At quarterback, USC's Carson Palmer and Cal's Kyle Boller are the top of the heap. They're poised to continue a long line of successful Pac-10 quarterbacks in the NFL, including guys like John Elway, Troy Aikman, Drew Bledsoe, and Ryan Leaf. (Well, not Ryan Leaf, but you get the idea.)

No running backs or tight ends make the top 13. At receiver, Michigan State's Charles Rogers and Miami's Andre Johnson make the list, along with linemen Jordan Gross (Utah), Kwame Harris (Stanford), and Eric Steinbach (Iowa).

On the other side of the ball, defensive end Terrell Suggs is one of the top performers -- notwithstanding his sputtering 40 times, his involvement in a recent pipes-and-punches brawl, and his decision to go Sgt. Schulz in the investigation that followed. Others are defensive tackles Jimmy Kennedy (Penn State) and Dewayne Robertson (Kentucky), corners Terence Newman (Kansas State) and Marcus Trufant (Washington State), and safety Troy Polamalu (USC).
